Question

How to use Cisco Call Manager Express with external VoIP company (like vonage)

Asked by: Italia_NYC

Hi all; kind of new to the VoIP scene, so please bear with me.

I just purchased a Cisco 2851XM router and have successfully configured CME and about four 7970 phones to call each other internally. That part works great and I am just wondering what would be involved in order to expand on this and have the capability to dial out (and receive calls) to/from anyone, like my regular land-line phone. I don't know if services such as Vonage are compatible with this setup.

Thanks in advance for the help.

You will need to route your external calls to a provider that supports h.323. I assume you will be using H.323 which cisco prefers. Does your router have any FXO ports?
You will need to engage your VOIP provider so you can configure your CME to connect to your providers network when making external calls. I would do some research, use a provider thats provides you the least amount of latency and jitter. These factors will make it doable, if not the poor perfomance and hence bad phone quality will not  make it worth while.

This router does not have any FXO ports. Is something I will need? I am not too certain what these FXO/FXS ports are for.

So if I am understanding correctly, I will have to configure my router (CME), to connect to my VoIP providers network? Is this something they support? They just let anyone configure a router and connect it to their network?

Thanks.

Also, do you (or anyone else) have a favorite provider that you could recommend that would meet my requirements?

Thanks again.

Hello,

I think Vonage support Only SIP and IAX I'm sot sure but the SIP is used by vonage and other VOIP provider, So you have to configure a SIP trunk to send out all your call trought it, here is a link about how to setup and configure SIP trunks on CME

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/sw/voicesw/ps4625/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00806a803b.html#wp1056609

For incoming call I don't know how to configure this but lets have a look at this Link

I don't have a provider yet, that's why I'm here looking for some opinions/options.

I am using Cisco 7960's and 7970's phones. The 7970's support Skinny and SIP. I have checked those links; they are great for getting a logical representation of the underlying technologies involved, but I want to hear from people with experience using call manager and a VoIP provider. I didn’t think this would be all that difficult a question to answer.

Ok,

I thin that you was in europe, I want to give you some URL about some providers :

http://www.axialys.net/
http://www.vivaction.com/operateur/index.php

But i think you have to use some provider nearest (US or Canada), also you can install Asterisk in LAB and use it as an provider SIP server in order to make CME interopability tests in lab!!

Regards,

by: Italia_NYCPosted on 2006-10-16 at 17:19:28ID: 17744000

I have an asterisk/trixbox server. I just installed it the other day.  I was going to use it instead of CME. I wasn't aware I could use them both simultaneously.

by: selmrabetPosted on 2006-10-16 at 17:39:37ID: 17744088

Yes You can
It depand on your architecture and Provider choice, also your business plan!!

the best way i proposed that you use asterisk server like this you can connect your Cisco IP phone locally with it using SIP (Change the cisco Ip phone version to sip) and configure a trunk with Your voip provider on the asterisk !!

The benefit of this sollution is that you can in the future add any low-cost IP phone compared to cisco ones (GrandStrem......) and you can connect to a multitude of VOIP provider type (SIP, AIX, H323...) to AIX is "Asterisk Inter eXchange protocol" it's the best used between asterisk servers.

For more details check http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-Asterisk

Best Regards,

Perhaps that's what I will do then. I will learn more about asterisk and see if I can't get that working with an external VoIP provider.

Thank you for your help selmrabet. More often than not I am let down by the responses I receive in this forum, but you have given hope to this forum. Cheers mate!
