Question

7960 Hanging at Configuring IP

Asked by: pk0611

I recently received an replacement 7960 phone from Cisco.  When I connect it to our network, the phone hangs at 'configuring IP'.  I am not able to issue an erase on the phone by using **#.  Is there any other way of resetting this phone back to factory defaults?

The phone is trying to connect with CallManager 4.1.

hello there

did you try using **#*

also go to setings and network configuration and option 8 : do you see tftp server.

if yes use the next step

in the call manager did you add the new phone mac address.

I have tried using the **#** but it was not helpful.  The phone has also been configured in CallManager, but CM is not yet even seeing the phone.

As for checking the TFTP server, the phone will not even allow me to get into the settings section of the device.

You should be able to get to the settings whether the phone is configured or not.  So, as greekstone said, if it's actually freezing up, the phone is probably bad.

First time a phone boots up and talks to callmanager, it checks to see if there is a newer binary load and it downloads it if there is a new one.  This can take a while, and on some phones(7935 for one) if the process is interrupted the phone can be hosed.

Have you tried connecting to the console port of the phone?

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps4967/products_upgrade_guides09186a008022a968.html#wp1049043

Otherwise, you could try resetting to factory default.

From http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/voice/c_ipphon/english/ipp7960/admin/5_0/7900trb7.htm#wp1087402

If the phone is not in a DHCP-enabled network, it will not automatically discover its network configuration and register with Cisco Unified CallManager after it resets. In this case, you must configure the phone manually after it resets.
Procedure

Step 1      Unplug the power cable from the phone and then plug it back in.

The phone begins its power up cycle.

Step 2      Immediately press and hold # while the Headset, Mute, and Speaker buttons turn on and off in sequence.

Release # after the Speaker button turns off.

The Headset, Mute, and Speaker buttons flash in sequence to indicate that the phone is waiting for you to enter the key sequence for the reset.

Step 3      Press 123456789*0# within 60 seconds after the Headset, Mute, and Speaker buttons begin to flash.

If you repeat a key within the sequence (for example, if you press 1223456789*0#), the sequence will still be accepted and the phone will reset.

If you do not complete this key sequence or do not press any keys, the Headset, Mute, and Speaker buttons will stop flashing after 60 seconds and the phone will continue with its normal startup process. The phone will not reset.

If you enter an invalid key sequence, the buttons will stop flashing immediately and the phone will continue with its normal startup process. The phone will not reset.

If you enter this key sequence correctly, the phone displays this prompt:

Keep network cfg? 1 = yes 2 = no

Step 4      To maintain existing network configuration settings for the phone when the phone resets, press 1. To reset network configuration settings when the phone resets, press 2.

If you press another key or do not respond to this prompt within 60 seconds, the will continue with its normal startup process and will not reset.

Otherwise, the phone goes through the factory reset process.
