Question

1140e DHCP Request for Voice Vlan

Asked by: mfitzy24

I am trying to get an 1140e phone to request an address other then the default vlan from a Windows 2003 DHCP server. I have setup option 191 for the Vlan info as well as 128 for the phone switch info on the DHCP server. I have a packet capture, and the phone requests an IP and appropriate options. The DHCP server then sends back all pertinent info and an IP, and the phone then sends a second request. The problem comes in when rather then tagging it's second request with the new vlan info, the phone send another  un-tagged request and adds in Option 50 essentially asking the DHCP server if it can keep the IP the server originally gave it.

Any ideas are much appreciated.

OK, I got it. There is a setting on the phone for how you want the phone to learn it's VLAN info. once I set it to DHCP, it started to listen for the 191 option and it bounced to the proper VLan on the 2nd request.

Can you elaborate on what the setting was on the phone you needed to change?  I've seen several posts where this reference is made but with no details about the specific change.  Thanks!

In the "settings" section on the phone, as you scroll down through the options, you will come across a "Vlan" setting. One of the options for the Vlan setting was DHCP. Once you set the phone to use DHCP to learn it's vlan it starts to listen to the 191 option from the DHCP server.

Hope this helps!

I've been battleing this for days now. Phone is a Nortel 1140E trying to use Microsoft DHCP via Cisco 3560 POE switch.

Vlan 101 = Data VLAN
Vlan 2101 = Voice VLAN

DHCP option 128 = Nortel-i1140-E,159.178.136.130:4100,1,2;159.178.136.131:4100,1,2.
DHCP option 191 = VLAN-E:2101.

Both options set in both DHCP scopes (101 and 2101).

This will only pull an IP from 2101 if we manually tag the phone in the phone settings. Any other setting it pull from the data vlan 101.

On the 3560 the below int config looks like this:

interface FastEthernet0/23
 switchport access vlan 101
 switchport mode access
 switchport voice vlan 2101
 no mdix auto
 spanning-tree portfast

Solved. The below had to be changed:

DHCP option 128 = Nortel-i2004-A,159.178.136.130:4100,1,2;159.178.136.131:4100,1,2.
DHCP option 191 = VLAN-A:2101.
