Question

Trixbox appliance CE or Pro?

Asked by: dtsmith1984

I am quite new to IP telephony, but we are currently using Aptela's hosted service with Polycom 501 phones.

We are considering getitng a integrated Voice/Data T1 line, and i have been looking at Trixbox Appliances for our PBX.

We would be getting 8 or 9 phone numbers coming in. with a total of 8 voice extensions and a fax machine.  All our phones are IP phones with the exception of one conference phoen and the fax machine, however i have a linksys spa 2102 for these.
Even tho we would have 8 voice extensions, we hardly ever have more than 3 active at any given time.

1)  Would the trixbox appliance be a workable solution for such a setup?
2) Should i get the appliance with the CE or Pro version?
3) Do i need a T1 card in the appliance or can i come off the T1 router with ethernet to the trixbox?

I'm just hoping to get some honest recommendations/ thoughts from anyone out there with some trixbox experience.

Thanks in advance!
-David Smith

1) Yes it should work fine.

2) Its depends on your requirements. The Pro version is a hosted solution with additional modules to allow you to link multiple sites together. More internet bandwidth will be used but maintaining the system will be much easier.

3) The split voice/data T1 line will require a router attached which will split out the data and then provide the voice on a T1 interface. You can get routers such as some Cisco models which will split out the voice and provide it over a SIP bases voip connection but I would recommend against doing this as you loose some of the extra information provided over the digital voice circuit and it is best to keep all this functionality in a single box. Therefore I would get a T1 card for the appliance.

Trixbox is good but the main advice that I would give is that you always think of it as Trixbox and not a 'customised Asterisk system'. I have seen many questions where people have wanted to do something Trixbox does not support nativly and have gone into the Asterisk configuration files directly and this gets very complicated and you sometimes have to make changes which can be overwritten of you make a Trixbox configuration change. As long as you bear that in mind and try out the free copy of Trixbox to make sure it has all the features you need then you should be fine.

We're getting a Data T1 set up today from Covad. We considered going ahead and setting up the Voice/Data package but the salesman recommended trying out the Data T1 first and then upgrading later.  Was quite surprised to hear a salesman say that, but we did as he suggested. They sent us an Edgewater 4500T4 router. I'm not sure if this will need to be changed out to enable the Voice/Data package or not.  Do you know anything about this router and if it's capable of doing the voice as well?

I guess the main things we would want to have is the call menu when someone calls in and the ability to forward calls to other extensions as well as outside number, voicemail, And the ability to have your extension forward to your cell phone if you don't pick up. Nothing fancy really.

Does the CE version support all of that?

Sorry I dont know that router. I mainly just know the Cisco range.

Again I am not a Trixbox user myself as I started with Asterisk before Trixbox came out so continued to use it. What you are asking is called an IVR menu and it a pretty standard feature and so you should not have any problems configuring it. That sort of feature you can add directly to the configuration files anyway without any real problems.
The only sort of thing you cannot do easily is if you need to insert code to modify the callerid for example since where you need to place the code is in a file that trixbox can rewrite itself.
