Well, I'm trying to change the caller id on the phone internally, so instead of 'front desk' it reads 'lobby' for example. I can't seem to manipulate that, I have the extention changed to 'lobby' in the corporate directory' but when I dial it still says 'dialing 123 'front desk' and when I receive a call from them it still reads 'front desk'.

What specifically are you trying to change?
incoming caller id name to phones is usually provided by your service provider you basically choose whether or not to display it
outgoing caller id name to phones outside of your PBX is also related to your service provider for example "company XYZ" when people see you calling them. You'll need to talk to them about changing that.
calls from extension to extension w/in your PBX can be controlled by CM.
some phones also have built in directories that have entries tied to names and if the incoming caller id number matches one of those entries it will display the name, so you have to check the directory on the phone as well (so for example ext 1000 is "front desk" in teh phone's address book and regardless of what CNAM is provided it will show "front desk".
