Question

Cisco IP Phone Firmware Issue on CME 4.0

Asked by: Apexadmin

I'm setting up CUCME on a 2851 running IOS 12.4(9)T7. I set up the phone loads and uploaded the firmware files, but the two phone types I have, 7941G and 7911G aren't liking it. The 7911's loop through a Cisco and "upgrading" screen, though it doesn't upgrade. The 7941's look like they download the firmware, but then it's hanging on the Cisco screen with a small "target" icon in the lower left where the check mark usually is.

I'm stumped. Here's the relevant config from the router:

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The phones will show up in the dhcp binding log on the router. I'm assuming this is a load issue, but I'm sure I have all the files required...

But I must have missed something.

Have you tried watching the boot sequence with a packet trace to verify what the screens are telling you?

by: ApexadminPosted on 2008-09-10 at 09:34:17ID: 22440158

I ended up opening a case with TAC.  They had me do a TFTP debug.  The 7911 was looking for a different file than what was specified in the .cnf file.  We tried a bunch of things but we ended up just downloading the version of firmware that the phone wanted.  They couldn't really give me a reason why.

Go figure.

Thanks for the update.

This is also why I was suggesting the packet trace.  There have been several instances where the Cisco TFTP boot sequence for a phone has failed due to bugs in their client phone code.  The packet trace does the same as the TFTP debug in that you can see the files being requested to see if they match what the TFTP server (the router in this case) is offering.

Sometimes the .CNF file is not interpreted correctly as in the case of some 7936 code, and also it seems the 7911 it seems.  You can also change the option 150 to point to a PC running a TFTP server and watch for the files requested as well.

I am glad TAC was able to help.  They are an excellent resource for their products.

Have a nice day,

-CoreyMac

Thanks for the info.  It seems that every CME install I do I run into some new problem.

All part of the learning process I guess.

CME is a pain I agree.  Regular Call Manager is MUCH easier once it is set up.

Learning is good though!  I try and learn something new every day....
