Question

How to setup CME 4.1 on 1760 router using PSTN line and 7940 ip phones...no SIP

Asked by: occs07

I have been trying to setup my home with Call Manager Express on a Cisco 1760 router. I am using my AT&T phone line which is plugged into my vic-2fxo card on the 1760 router and want to use my cisco 7940 ip phones to make incoming/outgoing calls through the PSTN line. I am running IOS 12.4(15)T8. Can someone post a config that should work with minor changes I would have to make? Or help me with my current config?

All my phones are IP phones, Cisco 7940's. The only analog device is the FXO card connected to my AT&T PSTN line.

I think I might have a bad PVDM-12 module because I did a debug voice ccapi all and this is what shows up %IPM_C54X-1-DSP_TIMEOUT: dsp 2 NOT RESPONDING. I'm hoping its a config issue, but I ordered another PVDM to be safe.

by: bkepfordPosted on 2008-12-22 at 06:01:44ID: 23226418

Are you getting incoming calls. Can you make outgoing calls? What is happening eitherway?

Where does this IP address go?

session target ipv4:10.100.50.100

For a home LAN you may consider only using G711 codec unless you will be transfering calls over the Internet to another PBX link. It will just simplify voicemail, Music on Hold and conferencing.

by: occs07Posted on 2008-12-22 at 06:30:07ID: 23226581

Incoming calls:
When I make a call from my cell phone it will ring to my IP phone but when I answer the call my cell phone will continue to ring.

Outgoing calls:
When I make a call from my ip phone to my cell phone I do not hear a dial-tone and also my cell phone never rings but when I do a debug voice ccapi all it shows that it is calling my cell phone number.

The ip address goes to my ip phone. My CME ip address is 10.100.50.2 which as the FXO card.

I have attached the debug files for both incoming and outgoing.

You don't setup a phone to ring like that through a dial peer. Delete all your current dial peers and add the ones I posted.

Your ephone is setup correctly though. so anthing you point to ext 1001 should ring the phone. I think your dial peer hosed the call.

Add this line in for dialing out. This will give you a second dialtone after you dial 9 and then dial like normal.

When I call from my cell phone to the ip phone it rings, I pick up and my cell phone just keeps ringing as if I never picked up the phone? When I place a call from my ip phone to my cell phone it doesnt make a dial tone noise nor does my cell phone ring.

Did you add in all these commands and are you dialing a 9 before you dial your cell phone?

by: occs07Posted on 2008-12-23 at 08:34:34ID: 23234675

Yes, I copied and pasted what you sent me and have dialed 9, then the number.

It looks like you might be missing some files on your TFPT server you need all four of these files for the 7940

tftp-server flash:P00307020200.sbn
tftp-server flash:P00307020200.bin
tftp-server flash:P00307020200.sb2
tftp-server flash:P00307020200.loads

Also does your DHCP server have option 150 setup to deliver the tftp server address?

Below really are just some common settings that you might want to add. Keep in mind the forwarding is assuming that you want to let someone forward the phone to an outside line or transfer a call to an outside line as well. The last line will recreat the cnf files for the phones which if you have made changes to the phone loads or anything it needs to be done. Then reset your phones.

Add caller-id just for feature

voice-port 0/0

caller-id enable

Next add these lines in under your telephony-service

telephony-service
call-forward pattern .T
transfer-pattern .T
create cnf

Ok I'll load those other files and give it a try. Also my DHCP server does have option 150 setup. I get my replacement PVDM today so I'll install it and see what happens as well.

Thanks for all your help. The problem was the PVDM module, once I replaced it everything worked like a charm. I'm sure configuration had something to do with it though. Now thats it working maybe you could help me with something else? I have 2 ip phones in my apartment and want them to act as if I only had 1 phone. Meaning same extension so when someone calls me it rings at both locations, but also I want the 2nd phone to have 2 extensions...1001 and 1002. 1002 will get my second phone line which is vonage. Have any ideas?

Yeah just set the buttons like a key system and have the two lines setup on each phones.

Hope you had a very merry christmas. I had another question for you. I have 2 phone lines now, 1 will be used for my phones at home, the other will be used for my parents phones at there house. I will be connecting my parents phones over VPN. My question is how do I seperate the phone lines? My extensions will be 1001 and 1002 which will go to voice-port 0/1 and my parents extension 1003 and 1004 will go to voice-port 0/0.

Ok on the incomming it is easy you just have it ring to the line with the connection plar command. The outgoing is a little more tricky the simplest way is to add a new set of dial peers where you dial 8 to dial out instead of 9(see below).

Now the biggest problem with this is when your parents dial 911 it will come up with your phone numbers so you may want to talk to your phone company to see what your options are.

dial-peer voice 58 pots
 destination-pattern 8[2-9]......
 port 0/1
 forward-digits 7
!
dial-peer voice 59 pots
 destination-pattern 81[2-9]..[2-9]......
 port 0/1
 prefix 1
!
dial-peer voice 60 pots
 destination-pattern 8011T
 port 0/1
 prefix 011
!
dial-peer voice 61 pots
 destination-pattern 8[2-9]11
 port 0/1
 forward-digits 3

I added the additional dial-peers but when I dial 8 I don't get dial tone. If I plug that device into port 0/0 it works just fine. Any ideas? Also at home I have extensions 1001 and 1002 which I want to get my 714 phone number, extensions 1003 and 1004 will be my parents extensions which I want them to get my 951 number. I don't want the 714 number going to my parents and I dont want the 951 going to me, they are seperate, but I would like to be able to dial their extensions to talk to them. How would I do that? Another question, how do I have a phone number dial both extensions? I was reading up on it and it looked like I had to make a translation id or something? So say I dial the 951 from my cell phone it rings to port 0/0 which would go to a translation extension say 100, in that translation it goes to extensions 1003 and 1004?

I wanted to thank you again for all your help, its greatly appreciated!

Here is Cisco's documentation on this

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucme/admin/configuration/guide/cmebasic.html#wp1036339

Now as far as the 8 goes you will not get a secondary-dailtone as only one per system is allowed. Now this does allow both people to use either phone line. Keep in mind though that having a IP PBX hooked up negates features like call waiting and things of that nature that would normally be provided by the phone company.

You can setup a third extention per location and ad that directory number to both phones. Anytime you want to call both phones just dial the 1021 or 1020 ext

Thanks for the info. For some reason when I dial 8 and any number it goes fast/busy. If I plug that phone line into port 0/0 and dial 9 it works just fine. Any ideas? Here is my updated config:

Your config looks good try this, Change your working dial peer to send calls out port 0/1

!
dial-peer voice 54 pots
destination-pattern 9[2-9]......
port 0/1
forward-digits 7

If this work then try the below code

!
trunk group VP010
!
voice-port 0/1
 trunk-group VP010
!
dial-peer voice 58 pots
 destination-pattern 8[2-9]......
 trunkgroup VP010 1
 forward-digits 7

Changing the port to 0/1 did not work for me. I started thinking that maybe I needed to have a PVDM module in both slots of the 1760 for this to work?

by: bkepfordPosted on 2009-01-12 at 06:28:05ID: 23353423

Maybe, definately worth thinking about but if you already have one then you should have enough for two dial out lines. If changing the dial peer to send 9 prefix calls out port could point to a bad port or licensing problem or something of that nature.

Yeah I'm not sure why it doesnt work, I'll have to run a debug and see. Thanks for all your help, I've gotten everything to work thus far.
