Question

Updating Firmware on a Cisco 7940G

Asked by: dyges

I have 35 Cisco 7940G phones with a current firmware version of 7.2 (4.0).  I am trying to update the firmware version to SIP without call Manager (I have downloaded the current firmware from Cisco) but I am unsure how to upload the files to the phone.  I have installed Solar Winds TFTP server (and configured DHCP #150) and placed the updated firmware files on the C:\TFTP-Root folder.  When I start the phone it see the TFTP server but does not update.  Ideas?

The phone is now connecting fter opening UDP port 69 on the TFTP server.  According to the logs the phone looks like it is trying to download a diffrent config.  How do i make the phone get the correct firmware update?

Below is a step-by-step when upgrading Call Manager/SCCP phones to SIP.  This is an example when using SIP 7.5.  Your phones may not be able to upgrade to a particular version of SIP in one shot, and you may have to get and earlier version of the SIP firmware and step upgrade the process. Keep the files in different directories and point your TFTP server to them as needed.

You will download a SIP image like P0S3-07-5-00.zip and unzip it into a directory .

The files would look like this:

OS79XX.TXT
P0S3-07-5-00.bin
P0S3-07-5-00.loads
P0S3-07-5-00.sb2
P003-07-5-00.bin
P003-07-5-00.sbn
SIPDefault.cnf
XMLDefault.cnf.xml

You need to make sure that the following files reference the correct firmware. What you see below is the name of the file above the line, and the contents of the file below the line.

XMLDefault.cnf.xml
------------------
<Default>
<loadInformation7 model="IP Phone 7960">P0S3-07-5-00</loadInformation7>
</Default>

OS79XX.TXT
------------------
P0S3-07-5-00

SIPDefault.cnf
------------------
# SIP Default Generic Configuration File
# Image Version
image_version: P0S3-07-5-00

Now with your TFTP server ready, the phones will contact the server and get triggered to upgrade to Non Call Manager SIP.  Now this is only for the firmware part of things.  You will need to create SIP<mac_address>.cnf files for the phone specific settings.

What is the status of this?  Can it now be closed out and graded?

sorry about getting back to this so late.
is the SIP<mac_address>.cnf file required?  if so do you have an example for this file?

Thanks.

Yes, you have to have phone-specific files.  You can create them with notepad, or some other ASCii editor.

In case things go awry for you, you can check my process against Cisco's

Go to this link and search for "Creating the Phone-Specific SIP Configuration File "  It also shows how to create a SIPDefault.cnf if you do

I am getting an error on my TFTP logs saying it cannot find  a cnf.xml  and  .tlv files.  Ideas?  I do not have any files in my TFTP folder like that..

by: API_NOCPosted on 2009-02-26 at 14:33:48ID: 23750780

You need to create the cnf.xml file with an ASCii editor, like notepad.  I gave you the contents of each required file earlier.  Look above.  You can ignore the .tlv file.
