Question

Dahdi install can not find kernel

Asked by: drew17

Hello,

I am trying to install dahdi-linux-2.1.0.4 on CentOS 5. I am following the direction in the document: http://www.cahilig.org/installing-dahdi-centos.

I get the following error when I execute the make command:

echo "You do not appear to have the sources for the 2.6.9-023stab044.4-smp kernel installed."
You do not appear to have the sources for the 2.6.9-023stab044.4-smp kernel installed.
exit 1
make: *** [modules] Error 1

I placed the  dahdi-linux-2.1.0.4 folder in /usr/src/asterisk/

Thank you for you help!

Hi,

The error message says that you don't have kernel sources installed in your system. You can continue to do compiling when you find and install the kernel sources. But the link you've provided has already expired so I cant go and check there.

What are you using dahdi-linux for? Isn't it ok to install just the CentOS and go with Asterisk? What dos this dahdi does that CenTOS can not?

You say this but it is obviouss that your lnstallation does not check the directory where you've placed your kernel sources. Did you try to plave it unde /usr/src instead?

Will you post the output from your:
uname -a

Hello KeremE,

All the install guides I came across say I need to install dahdi-linux on CentOS to run Asterisk. Do I not need to?

I did try to place the dahdi-linux-2.1.0.4 folder in /usr/src previously with no luck.

Here is my uname -a output as requested:

Linux <<<Server Name>>> 2.6.9-023stab044.4-smp #1 SMP Thu May 24 17:20:37 MSD 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Thanks!

The make files for Asterisk and Dahdi don't really care which directory they are run from. I always put the source files in the following directories:
Asterisk source in /usr/src/asterisk.
Dahdi source in /usr/src/dahdi

However, the Linux kernel source files do need to be associated with specific path names such as /usr/src/linux. If you don't have the Linux kernel source files installed, then try the following:

# yum install kernel-devel
That should install the Linux kernel source files in the directory /usr/src/kernels/<version_num>

Now you just need to create a symbolic link to that directory:
# ln -s /usr/src/kernels/<version_num> /usr/src/linux

Hopefully the version_num of the kernel source files will match the one reported by "uname -a", i.e. 2.6.9-023stab044.4-smp. In practice, it is usually sufficient that the main version numbers match - 2.6.9

> 2.6.9-023stab044.4-smp.  is not a regular kernel. It must have been built from the sources. so installing kernel-devel wont find any rpm's that match to download and install.

KeremE: ...In which case he should get a copy of the kernel sources from whoever supplied the OS. For example, if it is a hosted server then the hosting company should be able to assist through their support department.

By the way, dahdi is not some kind of alternative to Linux or CentOS. DAHDI stands for Digium Asterisk Hardware Device Interface and it provides the drivers for any Digium telephony cards that are installed. If the system is only using SIP, IAX and has no Digium cards, then dahdi may not be required. In that case, dahdi would only be needed if the meetme conferencing module was to be used.

Hello feptias and KenemE,

Thank you both for the clarification. I will only be using SIP and did not realize I will not require DAHDI.

Thanks again,

Drew
