Question

Reimage a Cisco 7940 phone

Asked by: gisvpn

Hello,

I am relatively new to Cisco phones and unfortunately came across a problem with the one I have been using happily for some time.

Following the post below I have been looking into trying to reimage my phone :

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Networking_Hardware/Q_24745568.html

I have installed an TFTP server onto one of my computers on the network (TFTPD32). However I feel that I need to do something additional with the phone to ensure the two can talk to each other. This is confirmed I think by the fact that nothing appears in the log files of the TFTP server when the 7940 boots up.

Is it the case that each time a Cisco phone boots up it will search for its TFTP server ?

I dont have the firmware files for the phone yet (working on that) however I wanted to check to see how I can get the two talking to each other so when I have the right files it will be easy.

As my phone wont boot up I cannot check the settings of the phone.  I have done a factory reset on the phone. What can I do to ensure the two talk to each other ?

Any help available would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

GISVPN

Hi,

Thanks for the links I wil have a a look at the links. I believe I need SIP as I will be configuring this with a SIP provider which I have all the configuration details for. Can you still configure your phone to be set up in a SIP environment when SCCP firmware is installed ?

Thanks,

If you want to use the phones witg SCCP the tftp server it not enough, the phones receives all settings from Callmanager or callmanager express, if you want to use standalone mode You MUST upgrade it to SIP!

by: gisvpnPosted on 2009-09-20 at 03:30:58ID: 25376571

I believe it already has the SIP firmware on it as I have been using it for sometime with a SIP service.

hello,

Thank you for everyone who has posted and helped with this problem. I managed to set up the TFTP server using TFTPD32. I used this also as the DHCP server and managed to get the phone reset and loaded with the latest image which resolved the problem i was originally having with the phone.

Thank you again. Not overally easy a process but got there in the end !.
