Question

CCM 4.2(1) migration to CUCM 7.x migration

Asked by: rmlss

Hi,

I am in the process of migrating my company's CallManager 4.2(1) servers to new CallManager 7.0 servers. However, after reviewing and trying to use the DMA tool to perform the migration I see that this does not work. The tool only operates on CCM 4.1(3), 4.2(3), and 4.3. My company has CUWL licensing for all of our devices, so we are entitled to CUCM 4.3 as well as CUCM 7.x. We have a new publisher server and a new subscriber server, and the new servers are compatible with CUCM 7.x. So, we can make the cutover quickly without much interruption in service.

Here are my questions:

1) Am I safe to assume I will need to first migrate the server to CCM 4.2(3) or CUCM 4.3 before I can migrate to 7.0?

2) Also, am I able to use BARS to perform the migration from CCM 4.2(1) to CUCM 4.3?

3) Finally, if I do need to migrate to 4.3 do I need to do anything with the licensing with this in-between step? Can I just request for the licenses for 7.0 once I fully move to CUCM 7.0, or do I need to register the licenses for 4.3 as well?

I'd also appreciate any best practice steps others have done to accomplish this. I appreciate any assistance anyone can provide.

If you have certain disc sets for 7.0 you may require to upgrade to a later version. However this may not be necessary. I am currently upgrading a 4.1.3 cluster to 6.1 and I thought that I may have to upgrade to a later version of 4 but this was not the case.

There is an upgrade utility you can run on your current publisher that will check what you need to do in order to be compliant for an upgrade. In my case the only thing that the upgrade tool complained about was that I needed to upgrade to a later version of the win2K operating system patches. The call manager version was less important.

If the upgrade assistant requires you to go to 4.3 first then you should not need to use BARS as the database should migrate OK as it is still SQL based (a backup would be wise though just in case!). There are no licensing transfers needed as all versions of ccm4 use the old licencing modle.

you can upgrade to CUCM 7 directly.
i upgraded 5 sites from call manager 4.2 to CUCM 7
just go for the following steps:

"      Run BARS, and take full backup from the call manager 4.2.
"      Take the Background images, Ring tones, and the MOH to your local disk.
"      Take all phone types configuration through BAT.
"      Determining Registration Counts By RTMT.
o      Number of Phones on Publisher =
o      Number of Phones on Subscriber =
o      Number of Gateways =
o      Number of users =
o      Number of Route Pattern =
o      Number of Translation Pattern =
o      Number of CTI Route Point =
o      Number of CTI Ports =
"      Check the Services, which are running and which are not.
"      Take the Servers Names
"      Connect all the phones in the site to the System and be sure that all of them are registered.
"      Add 50 phones 7970, 7961, 7962, 7965, 7941, 7942, 7945, 7906 with dummy MAC(for licenses) Addresses.
"      Take the DHCP Backup if you have
"      Make sure that power should not go down.
"      You have to have FTP server on your PC.
"      Run the DMA and take Backup and dont make any configuration during the backup dont make any configuration after the DMA..
"      Check that all the Backups on your hard drive.
"      Check if all the phones will register with the subscriber if you disconnect the publisher before proceed with the upgrade.
"      Run the Upgrade Assistant Utility on the publisher first then the subscriber, dont run it on both at the same time. If there is no problems continue to the next step if yes solve it then run the utility again then continue.
"      Insert the upgrade DVD in the Publisher and restart the server.
"      Proceed with the steps.
"      After the upgrade check the licensing report.
"      Return the Background images to the TFTP and the MOH to the MOH files.
"      Configure the DHCP on the Publisher Server.
"      Upload the Servers license.
"      Run the services and let all the phones to be register with the Publisher and check the stability of the system. All the features should be work before upgrade the Subscriber.
"      Upgrade the Subscriber with same procedure of the Publisher but dont select it as the first node.
"      After Subscriber upgrade check the replication and check if the phones will register with it.
"      Make final tuning.

Good Luck

Thank you both for your insight. However, I am still facing the problem of installing DMA on CCM 4.2(1).

I read everywhere you can upgrade directly to 7.x from 4.x. However, everytime I try to install the DMA tool it fails telling me that the DMA tool can only be installed on CCM 4.1(3), 4.2(3), or 4.3. I have tried several versions of the DMA tool for both 6.1 and 7.x, and they all give me the same error when I try to install the DMA tool.

The Upgrade Utility only shows 4.2(2a), 4.2(3), 4.3(1), and Latest in the drop down box when choosing which version I want to upgrade to. When either of you have used this app to perform an upgrade do you see versions 5 and later in the drop down box? If so, that would confirm my sinking feeling that I will need to upgrade to 4.2(3) or 4.3 to upgrade to 7.x.

Thanks again for your help.

in that case it looks like you might have to do the upgrade. I would be best if you are currently on 4.2(1) to upgrade to 4.2(3) as it should be a simpler upgrade process that moving to 4.3 as this is a step up. Also as you will be on the main version there should be any software to buy as it would only be considered a minor upgrade.

Remember to download the latest version of BARS for the current version your ensure to ensure you have the best quality backup.

Good luck with it all

I will attempt to migrate from 4.2(1) to 4.2(3). I will be doing that over the weekend. I will update on here how it went. Thanks for all of your help once again.
