Given what seems to be a limited budget, check out Asterisk.

It is well supported by the open source community.

I agree with using Asterisk or Trixbox but that will not work on Windows.  Freeswitch will work on windows but it doesn't currently have any open source user interface that is "ready".  You could check out the 3CX Phone System if you really need it running on Windows.

I checked out Asterisk and it looks like a great dev platform but I'm a windows shop (I fully appriciate what linux can do, I just took a different direction years ago).

3CX looks like a great start and I'm downloading it now... If I may... just a few followup questions:
1. Which is the best VOIP provider for quality of signal (skype, broadvoice, ???)?
2. Which softphone software works best for the price? Must work on XP, Vista, Mobile, Win7

by: dkwiebePosted on 2009-11-05 at 06:57:03ID: 25750087

1. I'm not sure there is a "Best" voip provider.  We've had really good luck with www.link2voip.com.  I'd also recommend telasip and voipstreet if you're in the USA.

2. For XP,Vista, and Windows 7 I'd recommend either the 3CX softphone or else Xlite.  As far as windows mobile goes, depending on the phone you're running, some of them come with a softphone.  I know I've used the softphone on the HTC phones with roms from ppcgeeks.

I think you are crazy if you don't install Trixbox.  It's free, runs on a POS computer and it is stable as anything.  For voice, I wouldn't choose Windows, just see what Cisco did after they launched their CallManager on Windows 2000, now it runs on Linux since version 6 I think.

by: dkwiebePosted on 2009-11-05 at 09:12:44ID: 25751649

Running Trixbox on a POS computer is not a good idea.  I know people do it but you really want your phone system on something that you know is stable.  It doesn't need a great deal of resources but you want something that you can depend on.  Of course it does make a difference if this is for yourself or for a client....

I should expand on my earlier comment regarding Freeswitch.  It runs on Windows and comes with decent examples to get a pbx up and running.

Alright, so I take (let's say a 6 year old computer with extra ram/hd).  Do a default install of Red Hat Linux.  Install Trixbox and set it up with a VOIP Provider, right?  Or is it much more complicated than that?

I could still use Windows softphones and such correct?

Is it worth the maintenance of a linux box when I'm a very small windows based software developement company?  Or will the linux machine just quietly go about its business providing VOIP?

by: heim0698Posted on 2009-11-05 at 09:49:05ID: 25751977

Go to trixbox.org download the bootable iso that will install CentOS linux and all of trixbox.  Then do all of your configuration in trixbox.  Get some sip trunks through someone like Vitelity, or throw in a sangoma or digium card for pots lines if you would rather use them.  Trixbox will quietly go about it's business providing great voip service.  Trust me you will forget about it compared to windows machines annoying you on tuesdays that there are new updates available.  Download XLite for your softphones and you will be cruising with voip for the cost of $0.00 for trixbox and xlite + the computer that it runs on + cost of sip trunks (vitelity pay as you go is great and it is 1.4 cents per min).

I've elected the Windows route (but I very much appriciate the linux info and i'm certain that will work for many other cases).  I just don't have the time or effort to put up a linux box right now.
