I tried reprogramming it for another feature, however when I do Feature * 3 to program features, and then press that button to select it as the one I want to program, it says something like no call picked up. On all other buttons, it would then ask for the feature code I wanted to program, so it seems to be treating it as some sort of "special" button.

I am wondering if it is not possible to clear it to nothing and you just have to assign a different function, or that one of the different functions is a 'blank'. Maybe assign a last number redial. I would think it is set with a directed call pickup currently.

On the not yet ancient but fairly old systems you would have the options to set a feature and clear shown as CLR and FEATUR. These would be displayed below the 'ANSWER 6291'. If feature is selected it will go through a menu of choices.
What you describe does not match up exactly with what I am familiar with. If you could look at the central phone unit and get the model we can probably get more specific instructions.
Here's some instructions for button setting from the phoneset,

and a list of feature codes,

Here's a link to a number of manuals, though not the master manual it does have manuals for programming station set features from the station.
