The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Home networking using telephone lines

Asked by java2architect in Telecommunications Providers, Miscellaneous Networking

I have high speed cable internet access.  I have set up a network in one room using a LinkSys cable/dsl router.  I simply connect the cable modem to the router and then upto the allowable 4 computers to my router.  Everything works just great!

Now I want to connect more computers.  So I decided I could buy a hub and hook it up to my LinkSys routers WAN port.  Then I'll have more ports to connect more computers since my router supports upto 253 odd IP addresses.  Problem is my room is getting crowded.  I would really like to put any additional computers I want in other rooms.

No problem I tell myself, I'll just take the CAT-5 from my LinkSys WAN port and shove it back into a wall socket, somehow get it up into my attic assuming the wire is long enough.  Then I'll put my hub in the attic and drop down cables into each of my rooms - at least rooms on the upper floor - which is not so bad.

Then I meet this "Network Engineer".  He says for $100 an hour he can do the following - and this is my real question - assuming what I said earlier is also an option.

He said, I have enough telephone i.e. RJ-11 wires running thru my house.  I need only 4 of these wires for RJ-45 (2 to transmit, 2 to receive).  I could take the CAT 5 a.k.a RJ-45 from my routers WAN port and work some magic and connect it to THOSE 4 Wires using a crimp tool.  No HUBS required.  I go to whatever room I want, and somehow find corresponding 4 wires, and make a RJ-45 socket out of it.  Then I simply connect my computer using a cable to this socket.  Presto, I'm done!!!

This seems to simple, but I cannot say it cannot be done.

So can it be done and if so, how do I go about doing this myself?

Thanks in advance
