Verizon wireless says that they do not need to give this driver. The card will not work without it. The laptop uses a Cardbus/Ricoh R/RL/5C476(II) controller. Does anybody understand the SSA controller use? I think it is attempting to emulate a USB connection through the PCMCIA port but is failing.

If you put the card in first, before loading the software, you'll ned to go to ADD/Remove Programs in the control panel and remove all instances of the VZ Access Manager software AND the drivers. Reboot the PC, then install the software WITHOUT the card installed. The software will prompt you when to insert it.
I loaded it exactly according to the instructions. Not putting in the card until told to do so by the software. When you un-install the software, it does not matter. The same result again. I'm looking in the registry to see if I can delete all accounts of the SSA controller (it leaves an orphan in the registry every time you attempt to install the card under the ENUM\PCI area) and make it work correctly.
Did you uninstall the drivers as well from Add/Remove programs?

Had the same problem....had an old card and the VZW software already installed. Plugged the new card in thinking things would be fine, and then XP tried to install the new card (and failed) instead of the VZW software.
The fix was indeed to uninstall the VZW software, remove the card, reboot, reinstall VZW software, and insert the card when asked. Hope this helps someone else some day.

Did you load Verizon's VZ Access Manager first? It's install should prompt you when to insert the card for detection.
