Disable BPDU filter.

by: ritruPosted on 2007-11-07 at 21:16:19ID: 20239291

why would I disable bpdu filter, it's only for disregarded bpdu's that are not switches, hubs, bridges and other type devices that use bpdu's to communicate...I does that affect the multicast devices on the ports that effecting the flapping on the network?

BPDU's are not enabled..

by: donjohnstonPosted on 2007-11-08 at 03:55:39ID: 20240384

BPDU filter disables the transmission of BPDU's on selected ports. If that port becomes part of a loop, a broadcast storm can occur. The message you are receiving is the result of a loop... which is not being detected by spanning-tree. Possibly because of BPDU filter.

by: ritruPosted on 2007-11-08 at 21:13:52ID: 20247658

Yea I understand you the loop the bpdu's are not transmitted by servers, workstations or any other devices that are not switching devices. But the bpdu filter is not the problem in this instance..What I'm receiving is multicast that may be have the same multcast information...How can I fix this issue..

by: donjohnstonPosted on 2007-11-09 at 03:34:20ID: 20248615

The message you are receiving is a result of a host MAC address appearing on multiple ports. That happens where there is a loop. Whether you realize it or not, there is a loop in your network. You can do a "show spanning-tree" on all your switches to determine where it is. You may find that one of the ports you've enabled BPDU filter on is in reality connected to another switch.

But no matter what, you've got loop.

yea I gotcha....Damn that's going to be alot of switches...boy boy....I was hoping you didn't say check all the switches..thanks don I get back with you..

by: microITPosted on 2008-02-10 at 18:42:27ID: 20863676

I have the same issue.  When you run show spanning-tree what am I looking for?

by: donjohnstonPosted on 2008-02-10 at 19:19:35ID: 20863791

Towards the bottom will be a list of ports. The will see "FWD" (forwarding) or "BLK" (blocking).

There should only be one path between any two devices.

donjohnston, thanks for the response.  in my case i actually did find a switch that had a fiber trunk and a ethernet trunk to the same core switch.  the ethernet trunk was in a blocking state upon sh spantree.  once in a blocking state does that mean it would have been causing hostflapping or a loop?  or does that mean STP shut it down?

by: donjohnstonPosted on 2008-02-12 at 05:57:35ID: 20874693

Neither. A port is placed in blocking mode because spanning-tree detected a loop. No (non-spanning-tree) frames are allowed in or out of a blocked port.
