Question

Problem connecting to Polycom MGC with new HDX 8000 & 9000. No video from far end.

Asked by: InfoSysNetworks

I have two new Polycom boxes (HDX 8000 & 9000). I can connect to multiple locations with no problem, but when I try to connect to a Polycom MGC at another site I don't get far end video or sound. I am prompted to enter my conference code, but never get the following video or sound. The other side says they see/hear me sometimes.

If I pull the 8000 or 9000 out and replace it with an older VSX7000E (using same IP), I can connect to the MGC with no problem. As I mentioned, the 8000 & 9000 can connect to other 8000s, etc, just no to the MGC.

I am running 2.5.0.6-3955 on the 8000 & 9000.

There is no router between the boxes and the internet router. The router is not blocking any ports and I am NATing the boxes. But as I mentioned, I can connect to other locations, so I don't think I have a network issue.

Any one seen this or have any ideas?

Test them on local LAN, if possible, just make sure no mistakes made in operational procidures.
Then seperate them by any router and verify all ports to be open for normal operation, as well consult with tech support of any "tricks" you might not aware of.
Over WAN use http://avcontrol.tv/pics/PCperformanceTools/  test speed/ports PC-to-PC on each end.
As well use any other port scanning tools/website, to find out for sure which ports are blocked over WAN, which ISP is doin it,and prove them on that blockage. They ussialy will not admit very easy- you have to get to right person.
Other options NATing was not set correctly by local admins.

Unfortunately I don't control the MGC and it is at a remote location and in production, so I can't move it to a local segment. The MGC has been working for 4-5 years and the 8000 & 9000 are the only units that I have that can't connect to them. The 3 year old 7000 connects with no problem.

There is no firewall on our side blocking ports. Both sites connect to the Internet with a Verizon DS3.

Does the 8000/9000 use a different range of ports then the 7000?

I'm not sure what ports are in use, you can verify that from tech support/manuals.
You can use kperf soft test speed by using same as MGC  ports, see on which port it will respond on which not, you probably will RD acces to remote PC port- 3389 to simplify testing.

The AV person just sent me this:

If I go into both HDX and set them for basic mode, I can connect to the MGC with video.  I took away the H.239 and took away the basic mode (which just sets it to run H.261) and it connected with video and audio.  So perhaps the problem has been solved.  I connected to some other sites and the video and audio came through.  I dont know what Im giving up with the H.239 not checked but this may be a work-around for now.

Those are codec standarts.
Some of them better use for low bandwith other will requare more bandwith, and ussialy better quality of the picture/sound.
See the diffrents clearly - you should teste it on LAN, but usialy tech support will give you best explanation on those details.

what you have done, is basically told your HDX devices to function as a non HD endpoints  as a normal end-points (like your 7000 end-points).

The ill-effects of this is that the resolution of the picture is much lowers than a 720 or 1080P they would have done, it will be CIF or 4 CIF at best.

I would think that MGC do not support higher video resolutions...
