Question

Problems with voip.

Asked by: granwizzard

Good morning,
I need help to understand a problem that become more often since we upgrade our infra-structure.
We have a Siemens Hipath 4000, a stack of 3 Nortel 5650TD and stack of 4 Enterasys B3G124-48P.
On the enterasys we dont have any errors but on the nortel we have on port:3/1 and 3/3 several informational that concernes me.
This two ports are connected to ethernet ports on STMI shelfs.
Since we made the upgrade some audio calls come like we are talking with a robo.
Can you explain me what are the meaning of Indiscards, OutDiscards, InErrors and FCSErrors.
And can someone point me in a direction to solve this issue.
I post here the files with what i´m talking about.

Thank you all

Indiscards are the count of any packets seen coming into the port that were dropped,
OutDiscards is packets that were dropped on outbound,
InErrors are any packets seen that had ethernet errors detected
and FCSErrors are specifically errored packets that had frame check secquence or CRC errors.

This errors can be generate because the port´s are in port mirroring to another port?

by: Rick_O_ShayPosted on 2009-11-03 at 09:22:51ID: 25731243

I don't think port mirroring should cause them. The FCS errors would most likely be caused by corruption to the packets once they left the transmtting side. It is interesting that the in and out discards are the same number. In discards would normally be completely independent of the output side. Do any of the port error counters increase during the problem? Try clearing the counters and then testing.

As i can see the in and out discards at this moment don´t increment, but the InErrors still do.
At this moment the port 3/1: has the value of 1.885.268 (InErrors) and port 3/3: has a value of 2.321.437 ( InErrors).
This errors and FCSerrors can turn quality o voice bad on the phones, i ask this because this are the ports that comunicate with PBX.

Yes any kind of packet loss problems can cause phone issues.

Can you have a look at the wiring between the switch ports and the PBXs?

by: granwizzardPosted on 2009-11-04 at 04:09:17ID: 25738490

Yes.

But i can ensure you that the cables are new, because we change all the wiring.

by: Rick_O_ShayPosted on 2009-11-04 at 06:29:58ID: 25739579

If the errors are not due to the wiring they are most likely a hardware issue.
Those errors may or may not be the cause of your voice issues but are too high to ignore.
I would contact the vendor whose equipment was upgraded and see if they have any ideas.
