the easiest way to do this in a webpage is to write a perl wrapper to crypt (man crypt). expect is fine for scripting this but if you want to do it from a webpage it's probably better to do it from perl.

You can use expect (http://expect.nist.gov/). There are a couple of password changing scripts in the distribution. You can get expect from http://www.sunfreeware.com /.
There's no need to upgrade the OS just to make this work but if you're interested in stuff like: 64 bit support, UFS logging, LDAP support, improved paging, Live upgrade (upgrade a running OS), Removable Media support, ...
you should upgrade to Solaris 8.
