need help setting up a unix php/mysql server and a file server

All right. I'm new to unix, and new to unix networking, yet i have a small home server that's running windows2003 and serving as a domain controler and outgoing webserver. this is a pentium3 laptop with 320mb ram and 30gigs hdd. I have 2 more computers running windows xp and connected to the same domain. although i know this is not bad, i also know that i could profit more from that laptop server if i were running a unix-os. what i am looking for is someone whoom would be keen to guide me through the process of configuration of that server. If you have good knowledge on unix systems please help me.

I've tried once to configure samba on red hat fedorabut did not suceeded and i am willing to work with more open systems such as openBSD or freeBSD if someone experienced tells me it's good.
