Question

Samba is running so slow, How can I bump up the speed ?

Asked by: henry007

I'm running Sco OSR 5.0.7 with SAMBA v3.0.14a, my LAN is running at 100mbits/sec. So even at 4 feet from the server I'm getting slow responses on my windoze xp computer from samba. It takes an eternity to copy files from one place to the other. I'm also running another samba server on a linux box on the same LAN but on a different workgroup and seems to work ok. Or is it maybe a bottle neck somewhere in the HUB that sits between my computer and the server (4 feet) ? Is there a good software that detects bottle necks on a LAN or can create charts of currently availble IP's and tells the speed between them ?

Here's my current samba configuration (full view):

There can be a number of causes for SMB file transfers to be slow, including:

Memory, cpu, or disk I/O resource exhaustion on the Samba server (check with top and/or iostat)

A link mode negotiation problem at the server or the client.  This occurs when either ends ethernet interface and the hub/switch it connects to are using different duplex modes. The fix is to identify which machines are at fault and to force one or both ends of the link to the same mode.

Use FTP to transfer a large file from the SCO box to the XP box. That'll eliminate Samba from the equation, and give you an indication of your network speed/health

Remove these two: defaults usually do better.
SO_SNDBUF=8192 SO_RCVBUF=8192

Change this to no. Old SCO may excessivley swap to disk in case mmap() areas are too large.
use mmap = Yes

jlevie, On linux, which file contains the eth0 adapter's duplexity ? So I can make sure it's running at half and not at full duplex (i'm using hubs and not switches).

by: gheistPosted on 2005-12-20 at 08:17:46ID: 15519422

SCO is not Linux. Your extra question should be given as new question.

by: henry007Posted on 2005-12-20 at 08:33:11ID: 15519573

gheist,

I made the changes you suggested but still no gain of speed.,

tfewster,

ftp is slow too, SCO box takes like 20 seconds just to give me the login prompt, and I'm just 4 feet away from the Server using a windoze XP.

by: henry007Posted on 2005-12-20 at 09:07:31ID: 15519912

I tried SFTP and it's blazing fast!, I moved a 4meg file from my XP to the SCO box in a blink of an eye.

Wait is due to bad DNS setup at your site. Ask your DNS admin, or here if you go not find one around.

Oh well, I replaced all my hubs (old 10mbits) with new 10/100 Mbits Switches and that fixed in part the problem.

by: jleviePosted on 2005-12-21 at 12:35:45ID: 15529603

Well, a 10mbps hub would be a bottleneck...

Now you need to make sure that the NIC on the server is correctly negotiating its link mode. A quick check for that is to transfer a file of 2-5Mb in both directions between the server and a client (preferrably with scp or FTP). The transfer rate should be a good fraction of the link speed (6-8Mb/sec). If there's a link mode problem one or both directions will show really bad rates, perhaps as low as ten's of Kb/sec).
