network apps can't initialize

something happened to my Windows XP (SP1) box a couple of weeks ago.  i don't remember doing anything except installing HomeSite.  i have since uninstalled, but right after I did it I was unable to get CuteFTP to connect (it just hangs without putting anything into the connect log) and I just tried to connect to my work network using Cisco VPN Client.  it does the same thing: just hangs when attempt to init the connection.  both of these were working as of a couple of weeks ago.  i have Sygate Personal Firewall, but both of these still don't work with it disabled.  I have not consciously changed my network config at all.

what could be going on?  what should I look at?  am I missing something obvious?

Thanks,

Justin

Is this happening to everything network related?  Can you browse the internet and such?

i can browse the internet.  i can even connect to FTP through I.E. and DreamWeaver MX without a problem.  so far I have only had problems with CuteFTP and Cisco VPN.  i am sure it is not those apps that are having the problem though, since they are both unrelated and the problem occured in both at the same time.  also, i have uninstalled CuteFTP and reinstalled to no avail.

i should mention that i am very experienced with computers and networking, and i haven't been able to figure this problem out, so it must be something fairly weird.

worse case scenario, I can reinstall my OS, but I don't really have the free time for that right now.
i should also probably not that the XP Internet Connection Firewall is disabled on the computer
i also just noticed that under Network Connections I have an "Internet Connection" object of type "Internet Gateway".  This seems to indicate that it is related to connection sharing, which I didn't think I was using.  My network is basically a cable modem going into a broadband router which is a DHCP server to the two computers on the network.

i don't remember seeing this Internet Connection object, but that doesn't mean it wasn't there.  I tried disabling it, but then I couldn't browse the internet or anything.
this is getting weirder.  when i disable the Internet Connection object, not only does my computer lose its connection, but the other computer does to.  on this other computer, when i do "ipconfig /all" from the command line, it looks like it is obtaining DHCP directly from the router and doesn't use my computer at all for internet access.  however, when I disable/enable the Internet Connection object that computer's internet connection apparently is enabled/disabled as well.

i'm thoroughly confused.  what is going on??
The Internet Connection icon can show up after changes to network connections and such, but it usually doesnt indicate a problem.  It sounds like something must be blocking these two programs exclusively, otherwise all FTP programs would be blocked.  Blocking programs is not a function of windows as far as I know.  You say you disabled Sygate and no joy?  Could your router be blocking programs somehow?  Any other firewalls?  How does the HomeSite program use your network?
Interesting... It would appear that you're sharing your internet connection with your other computer.  Would you post the results of a "route print" from DOS on both computers?
the homesite program is no longer on the computer.  i simply suspect that Homesite caused the initial problem because i noticed it after its installation.

i still have the problem after disabling my firewall.  i have no other firewalls.  the router cannot block apps.

i will try that "route print" thing in a little while.  the other computer is in use by someone else right now.
here it is from my computer:

nothing looks particularly interesting to me.  192.168.1.1 is the router obviously.
Yeah, I'm just looking to compare the two and see if the one might somehow have its internet access router through the other computer - this wont have anything to do with your apps I dont think...

that is the route table for the other computer.  that computer is .101 and my computer is .100.  both route tables look fine to me.

what is that Internet Connection object?  how come i have one and the other computer doesn't (same OS and basic config).  how is it that when I disable the I.C. object, both this computer and the other lose their Internet connection?

all of a sudden i feel like a novice computer user again. :-)
is there a way I can just completely reset my LAN settings without reinstalling the whole OS?
