The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

VPN and LAN on same machine

Asked by trgott in Windows 95 - 98 Networking

Tags: machine, same, vpn, lan

I have one PC running Win98, second PC running Win95a.
I installed VPN on Win98 machine. Everything was cool. I
then installed LinkSys EtherFast 10/100 LAN cards in both
Win98 and Win95 machine, connected via LinkSys Fast Ethernet
5-Port Workgroup Hub. After changing network ID in Win98
machine to local workgroup (as opposed to network domain
used with VPN) and installing network protocols, etc. on
Win95 machine, the Win98 and Win95 machine communicated
with each other in both directions, ie. each machine could
see the other, as expected.

At some later point in time, this was no longer the case.
The Win98 machine could see the Win95 machine on local
network, but the Win95 machine could not see the Win98
machine on the network. After testing all the components
in the system, I became convinced it was a configuration
problem. I decided to upgrade Win95 machine to same version
of Win98 as my other machine. With both Win98 machines
configured for local workgroup, everything worked fine, ie.
communication in both directions.

Next, I reconfigured original Win98 machine for VPN, ie.
changed workgroup name to remote workgroup name and changed
user id to remote user id. When I was through with this
session, I reconfigured original Win98 machine for local
networking, ie. local user id and local user workgroup.

The problem described above reappeared, leading me to
believe that the VPN configuration was the culprit. What I
don't understand is why the machine that was not
reconfigured could be "fixed" by loading a new OS on it.
This would seem to imply that a registry value in it was
being modified by the remote Win98 machine.

Has anyone seen this problem, and is there a simpler
solution than reformatting and loading OS to resolve it?
