Bypass proxy filters (bess)

hey all, this may be out of topic but my network is run on a proxy filter called bess. This is getting very annoying because I am trying to teach a class html and the proxy will not let us into alot of the sites that I wanted my students to see. For example....
We type in the address of one of the more popular free web hosting domains (geocities) and we come to a page that says we are not allowed to visit this site. It has a place for a password to bypass it or request that they unblock it. Also, our proxy's are configured as bess-mveca.proxy.ohio.gov  port 7060. If you know of anyway to get around this annoying proxy filter please respond...

Why don't you dicuss your problem with the Sys Admin. of your network and see if he can fix your problem.  It's really a simple thing to do for him to open up more access for you or even give you a password to bypass the filter.

He said that he is not in charge of the proxy filter that it is controlled somewhere else. As for the password option he said he is not allowed to give out his own password to anyone else, bu the has said that there are ways around it, but he doesn't know.

Sounds like you need to go a level up and figure out who controls this firewall and how you can get access from them to what you need.  They usually make these things pretty impervious and if it is a third party company they're most likely professionals in keeping people from going in or out to restricted areas.  Where I work, we have a third party firewall service and whenever there is a site I can't get to, it's kind of a bureaucratic mess trying to gain access.  It gets done, but not quickly.  As for a way around this...good luck.  Maybe someone else will have some better ideas.

As long as your Sys admin is in agreement and supports this line of action you can remove the proxy setting from your browser, add a default gatewat to your NIC and use a third party vendor software such as virtual motions LAN bridge running on your server to totally bypass the proxy, however you will also loose the ability to cache sites locally.

That sounds like it might work but before I accept this answer could you go into more detail about how to go about doing this. I would need pretty specific instructions seeing how I am not all that great on the computer.

Well there are many different ways to provide internet services to a LAN, however these are all based on one common factor the use of the TCP/IP protocol. In your current configuration proxy provides connectivity on tcp/ip port 80 between your LAN and the internet, that is to say proxy routes ip traffic on your behalf. To manually set up the routing table for your connection and bypass proxy, asuming your ip address that has been assigned to you is static and of a fake ip block or internal LAN ip range eg:)192.168.x.x and your server has an ip of 192.168.2.1 and subnet of  255.255.255.0 then your routing table would look like this:

This routing table may seem unclear do to the limited space of this pane and if you like I can email you a copy but as you can see this method is very complicated so I would suggest download virtual motions lan bridge and install it on your server, then install the client application on each workstation and remove the proxy setting from your browsers, you can acquire lan bridge from :
www.virtualmotion.com/index.htm.Keep me informed, if further instrctions are required, just ask.

This question was awarded, but never cleared due to the JSP-500 errors of that time.  It was "stuck" against userID -1 versus the intended expert whom you awarded.  This is a manual correction, so that the expert will now receive the points you awarded, and I have verified that you were not charged points again for this adjustment.
