Windows for WOrkgroups V3.11 will work on your 386 and can talk with Win98 using NETBEUI.  You can even install the WFW TCPIP and use that.

There are also several TCPIP network implementations that will work on a DOS only computer.

Just a couple of other thoughts.  You could use IPX/SPX on your Win98 boxes and get the Novell Client for DOS from an old Novell disk or from http://www.novell.com/download/

Or use LanManager for DOS. It's a Microsoft product

if I download the novell client for win 98, will it work with the Lantastic V6.0 on my dos computer.

Novell Client WILL NOT WORK with LanTastic. It is a CLIENT software for Novell servers.

You can connect the three computers with Microsoft Networking:

1. Win98 can be connected with any protocol. You just need NIC driver, protocol, Microsoft Networking Client installed. (And File and Print Sharing if needed.)

2. On the DOS machines, you should install Microsoft Client Network 3.0 (it can be found on an NT server CD-ROM or can be download from Microsoft: ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/clients/MSCLIENT/dsk3-?.exe).
Than download the file: ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/wg1049.exe, after decompression, just copy the NET.* files on the client and you will be able to share resources on the DOS machines, as well.

3. There has to be at least one computers running Windows on the network. (That shouldn't be a problem, since there is only one DOS machine.)

I really only want to keep DOS, I tried Windows 3.1 and it is too slow.   I am going to try Hiandra's suggestion, and see if that works for me.

I have got the Dos computer running the Microsoft Network Client, then I copied the Net.* files from wg1049.exe (3 of them) onto the Dos computer, I overwrote the existing files from the MSclient. I hope this was the right thing to do.

The win98 computer couldn't find the dos computer, using the default changes made by MSclient to autoexec.bat.

So then I tried this
NET SHARE    (on the Dos computer)
which seemed to work, the Win98 computer found the dos computer, using the Find Computer ie. Start, Find
but when I tried to assign a drive to it using Win explorer, Tools, Map network drive. it couldn't find it. It also doesn't appear in the Network Neighbourhood at all.

what should I do...

thx alot Hiandras.

Did you tried to map the drive with:
\\computername\sharename

Also I think you should load SHARE.EXE on the DOS computer, before you can share a drive with NET SHARE (I am not really sure about this one, but give it a try.) If you still have problems, I will set it up myself. I did this couple of months ago, but it worked for me!

I am still having problems,
when i run net share, the dos computer says file sharing not enabled, even thought I have already run SHARE.EXE in autoexec.bat

by: gumstaPosted on 1999-11-04 at 17:12:14ID: 2184821

here is a copy of my autoexec.bat
@ECHO OFF
PATH       C:\NET;C:\DOS;
SET  MOUSE=C:\MOUSE
PROMPT $P$G
share
C:\NET\net initialize
C:\NET\nwlink
c:\net\net start full /yes /verbose
C:\NET\net start server /yes /verbose
c:\net\net share cdrive=c:\ /full /yes

the message returned is
Error 7387 :file sharing is not enabled

Check SYSTEM.INI
Under [network] you should have the following lines:
filesharing=yes
printsharing=yes

thanks hiandras, this worked. I was able to then map the drive on the Dos computer from the two Win98 computers :))
