enable dns for name resolution
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI ran the IE 6 upgrade program yesterday, and now cannot connect to the internet.
I have tried everything I can think of.
Problem system is on a home network.
Removed and reinstalled the network card.
Can ping localhost, and other pcs on the network.
Can ping IP addresses.
Tracert runs fine as long as you use the IP.
Seems to be a problem with DNS, but every setting I looked at is the same as systems with no problems.
Dynamically assigned address.
DNS disabled.
Gateway page blank.
Winipcfg has the DNS address correctly.
Route print looks exactly the same as working machines (except for the different dynamic IP of course)
I have gone back to IE 5 and nothing works yet.
Reset all IE settings to default.
Only thing I can't figure out is why TCP/IP doesn't have the network card next to it, ala:
TCP/IP -> ATEN USB Network Adapter
I am about ready to image this machine, but would like to avoid that. Thanks in advance.

I can ping IP addresses but not domain names. I am using this machine as part of a home network, using a Linksys router and hubs, etc. None of the other machines are using DNS, and they all work fine. This one also has worked without enabling DNS up to yesterday.
>>Only thing I can't figure out is why TCP/IP doesn't have the network card next to it, ala:

you have only one net adaptor installed ( even dial up adaptor is not there)
You are correct about that. I realized it right after posting, and after reinstalling the dial up adapter, it looks like it used to. Thanks.
Thanks kiranqhaq. I searched on Google for :
debug DNS name resolution problem +Win98 -Linux
and found this site:
http://www.users.qwest.net
which had this:
>> ping 216.32.74.51
ping www.yahoo.com
If the first one succeeds and the second one fails, there's a good TCP/IP connection but no name resolution. In that case, try this fix:
Go to Control Panel | Internet Options | Connections. If there's a LAN Settings button, click it, then clear all of the boxes on that screen.
If that doesn't help, try this:
1. Un-install Dial-Up Networking. Don't reboot.
2. Delete registry key HLM\System\CurrentControlS
3. Re-install Dial-Up Networking.
4. Reboot.<<
My problem was not Dial-Up Networking, but the symptoms were the same. The first fix did not work, but the second one did. Thanks for helping me solve a very knotty problem!
