The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Fresh install of Win98SE, working NIC, LAN/WAN still down?!

Nothing worse than having LAN probs at home! And it's my daughters computer to boot. *sigh*

Her computer decided to crash horribly while she was online playing NeoPets. After working on it for a couple of hours (virus scan, reinstall TCP/IP, reinstall NIC, etc) to restore her LAN/WAN connection I gave in and opted for a full format/reinstall. The best I can get is to see her computer listed in Network Neighborhood on my computer but it's inaccessible. From her computer she cannot see the other two computers on the network but can see her own computer listed. Nothing (other than localhost) is pingable from her system.

Basic config info:
I'm using a Netgear RP114 router as the gateway.
My computer has a Netgear FA312 card (Win98SE also recently reinstalled).
Hers is using a LinkSys LNEPCI II (Win98SE).
The third computer is my wifes laptop (WinXP) but it's not really in play with this problem.

The router's ip address is 192.168.0.1 and is also the DHCP server.
I've got my computer set to gather the information automatically and it works fine. I set hers up the same way and it wasn't able to see the network. I entered 192.168.0.1 as the gateway, specified an ip address of 192.168.0.20 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and now as I said before, her computer is listed in my 'network neighborhood' but I can't access it (file sharing is enabled) or ping it.

Just to be sure that it wasn't some odd hardware glitch I swapped my card with hers with identical results. I tried two different PCI slots as well. I didn't really expect it to be a hardware problem but I wanted to be sure to exclude that possiblity. I also tested her network cable with a cable tester with no errors. I also tried different ports on the router.

What other information can I provide?

Thanks in advance!
