Why do I lose connection to mapped network drives when 2 nics are enabled?

Why do I lose connection to mapped network drives when I have 2 nics enabled on a windows 2000 machine?  I have one nic connected to our domain where the mapped drives are and another nic connected directly to another workstation that has a plotter printer on its own network.  After a couple of minutes the mapped drives start getting red x's on them and you have to keep clicking on them and then they will recconect.  I have noticed that the first red x's are on one server and then the next red x's are on another servers shares after a few more minutes.  Finally, there are some shares on an xp workstation that will get red x's as well.  So after about 10 minutes all mapped drives are red x'ed.  Also, if you are using the internet it works ok until you go away from it for a few minutes. Then you have to keep refreshing then it will work again after about 30 seconds.

It seems that when I disable the nic to the workstation with the plotter all problems go away.  Until you need to print to that plotter:)
