Question

netbios over tcp/ip disabled in ipconfig but enabled in properties - cannot browse the lan by computer name

Asked by: BFulford

We have a laptop that is able to contact the domain and log in, but then is not able to open a network share, e.g. \\servername\share.

Other computers in the office can open the same network share. The laptop's TCP properties are set to enable NetBios  over TCP/IP  but when ipconfig \all is run, it indicates that NetBios over TCP/IP is disabled. I have already tried another question's solution with the following: netsh int ip reset c:\ip.txt but that was not successful. I do not want to load NetBEUI either.

Check the services in the "Administrative Tools" folder for "DNS Client". You will not be able to resolve hostnames without this service running.

No, it was already enabled. We disabled it, and now it cannot be re-enabled.

The "DNS Client" service is running.

You may be able to "fix" it by doing so in the registry.
Note: Only make changes to the registry if you are comfortable doing so. Incorrect changes can render your computer useless.
Locate the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters\Interfaces
There will be a series of these with a GUID (long number), they are created when you add and delete adapters. Locate the current one, and look for a DWORD entry "NetbiosOptions" if set to 0 it is disabled and can be enabled by choosing 1. If it is not present, which is the case if it has never been successfully enabled on that adapter right click in the appropriate window on the right and choose new DWORD, name it NetbiosOptions, and set the value to 1. You may have to reboot.

If you need help locating the GUID, the following may be helpful.

Can you resolve the computer name using DNS? DNS is used primarily in a domain. At a command line enter:
nslookup computername
I assume you can connect to the share or map it by IP:
\\192.168.123.123\ShareName?

Hi BFulford,

I would check the firewalls installed on your computer. The computers purchased today come preloaded with Desktop firewall software like Norton Security, MCafee Security, Trend Micro and many others.

If you can ping the hostname or ip address of the server which stores the shared folder, then its not a DNS or Netbios issue.

Its most likely a desktop firewall which is blocking ports necassary to access the shared folder.

Regards,

nitadmin

>>"No trying to connect to the ipaddress\sharename doesnt fly."
Then it has nothing to do with name resolution.

Can you access the Internet? If so networking is fine.

Can you ping the computer/server with the share? If not is their a router between you ans it, or a software firewall enabled as stated by nitadmin.

The weird thing is that there was no problem with the internet access... but no domain file share access. There was no firewall installed and the laptop worked fine the week before. We just decided to pull the plug and try a system restore before reformatting and reinstalling windows.

by: RobWillPosted on 2007-12-08 at 08:28:34ID: 20434417

Internet works.
Cannot access a file with \\192.168.123.123\ShareName
Odd.

When you try do access the share do you get a path not found, or access denied message?
Can you ping the server (host sharing the resource) by it's IP address?

Is your laptop a member of a domain or workgroup.

Is the server you are trying to access a member of domain or workgroup.

Make sure your laptop is a member of the same domain or workgroup.
You may want to un join the workgroup or domain and then re-join the work group or domain.
Also make sure, the ip addreess obtained by your NIC card is in the same network as the server.

Best regards,
nitadmin

If the laptop is on a workgroup, the dns search suffix in tcp/ip properties > advanced > DNS could be added to append the suffix for your domain in the event that it cannot find the server.  Also you could try accessing the resource utilizing the FQDN (ie, \\servername.namespace.com\share).

Load PStools onto server 2008
From command prompt goto pstools directory type:
Psservice  setconfig NetBT auto

Start the TCP/IP NetBIOS helper service

Other services that may need to be started
Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Location Awareness (Startup Type 'Manual')
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
