The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Can't get XP machine to network - nothing listed in network neighborhood
Tags: Microsoft, Windows, XP, Networking
Just added a wirless router and two Vista machines to my XP machine.  The XP is wired and the two Vista are wireless.  Internet connects fine on all machines.  Vista machines can see each other and share files.

View Full Map in Network and Sharing Center on the Vista machines can see the XP machine but cannot access it - the curser over is a pointer not a hand.

I can ping all machines from the others.  I have added the LLTD patch to the XP machine.  Also had to change the HKEY_Local_Machine\System...\Tcpip\Parameters  IPEnableRouter to 1.  Have checked all services on XP machine and it looks like all are started that need to be.

Obviously, all machines have the same workgroup name set.

The router can see all machines too.  Linksys has a EasyLink Advisor and it show all machines and the IP addresses.

Have spent several days scanning the net trying to figure this out but can't get it working.  The Vista machines do not see the XP machine and the XP machine shows NOTHING in Network Neighborhood - not even itself.

Actually sharing something, rather than just file sharing turned on?  Same users and passwords entered on all pcs?  Network discovery on?

You might be interested in looking at this question which I asked not long ago, when I was having trouble setting up my home network with XP machines and Vista in it.  It mentions all of the things needed for a wireless network with XP and Vista in it:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Windows/Windows_Vista/Q_22772074.html

In setting up my home network, I found I had to turn off the firewalls temporarily before trying to see the Vista machine in the XP My Network Places, then turn the firewall back on once it succeeded.  See this page:

http://www.lockergnome.com/nexus/blade/2007/04/09/vista-networking-problems-try-this/

The following page has a quite good treatment of File and Printer Sharing in Vista, complete with screenshots:

Subscribing just for the knowledge we will find here.
Sorry cpuetz, I will be no assistance here, yet.

01.04.2008 at 08:45AM PST, ID: 20583779
Sorry, I failed to mention that I have turned all wirewalls off.

Also, file sharing on the Vista machines work fine.  I can share from Vista to Vista.

I think the problem is the XP machine.  When I go to View Nework Computers, the XP machine itself does not even show up.

Here are some other things I have tried & noticed:

NetBios over TCPIP is enabled but when I type ipconfig /all it shows as disabled.  This is also the case on the Vista machines.

Also, when I look at View Full Map in Network and Sharing Center on the Vista machines, they show a IPv6 address but the Router and the XP machine does not.  According to LinkSys tech support, this does not matter.

01.04.2008 at 08:47AM PST, ID: 20583815
That's FIREWALLs - not wirewalls!!!

01.05.2008 at 05:54AM PST, ID: 20589076
Any more ideas?

You didn't answer my previous questions:

>Actually sharing something, rather than just file sharing turned on?  Same users and passwords entered on all pcs?  Network discovery on?

Also, what type of router?  And what firewalls?  (I know you said you turned them off, but just for information's sake, it might be useful to know that...)

01.05.2008 at 01:03PM PST, ID: 20590721
Yes, sharing a printer and C drive on XP.  Sharing C drive on Vista.

I use the adminstrator account on the XP but have tried setting up an account that matches the account on the Vista and it didn't work.  When I access one of the Vista machines from the other on a different account, it prompts me for the user and password.

Yes, discovery is on.

It is a LinkSys WRT150N router.  I had a NetGear RangeMax before and it did not work either.  I have TrendMicro Internet Security on all computers and have the firewall off, as well as Windows firewall.

Well, according to this web page, your router seems to be compatible with Vista:

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C1&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1169671929625&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=2962597537L13

Have you checked to see if you can download more up-to-date drivers?

01.06.2008 at 06:14AM PST, ID: 20593961
I've got the latest firmware version for the router.

Is it normal that I don't even see my xp computer listed in View Workgroup Computers?

01.08.2008 at 06:24AM PST, ID: 20608696
Again, it looks like the xp machine just won't do any networking

01.08.2008 at 07:06AM PST, ID: 20609129
On the xp machine:

I can ping the Vista machines.
I can Start/Run \\xpcomputername.
I cannot Start/Run  \\xp ipaddress.  Error:  The network location cannot be reached.
I cannot Start/Run \\vistacomputername.  Same error.
I cannot Start/Run \\vista ipaddress.  Same error.

On the Vista machines:

I can ping the XP machine.
I can Start/Run \\vistamachine.
I can Start/Run \\visa ipaddress.
I cannot Start\Run \\xpmachine.  Error:  Windows cannot access \\xpmachine
I cannot Start\Run \\xp ipaddress.  Same error.

cpuetz,

Please Share a Folder on each c: drive, not the entire c:/ drive.

I believe you cannot share the root directory. Let me know if that does anything.

01.09.2008 at 06:06AM PST, ID: 20618155
I've always shared the C drive in the past without problems, but I made the change to just share a folder and it still doesn't work.

On the XP machine I ran:  nbtstat -n  and I get the error:
NetBT is not bound to any devices

This must be the problem but I haven't found out how to fix it yet.

OK.  I have sure learned a lot about networking though this entire ordeal.

I hope this will help someone else!!!

I uninstalled all my Network Adapters from the Device Manager and Rebooted.  That fixed my problem!!!!!

Here is a summary.  I don't know if all steps are needed, but this worked for me.

On the wired XP:
1.  Added the LLTD patch.
2.  File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks installed.  Most likely this is already done.
3.  Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 installed.

On the wireless Vista:
1.   Network Discovery, File Sharing, and Public folder Sharing is ON.
2.   Network set to Private.

On all computers:
1.  Worgroup the same.

When I ran nbtstat -n, I got the error:
NetBT is not bound to any devices

I uninstalled all my Network Adapters from the Device Manager and Rebooted.

I am very happy to have a working network!!!  Praise the Lord!!!

Thanks for you input on this problem!

cpuetz, if you solved your problem yourself, then you should go to Community Support General topic area (click on the link at the top right of the page labeled Support) and enter a zero point question asking that the question be deleted (or made into a zero point Previously Answered Question if it contains information possibly useful to others) because you solved it yourself.  Your points will be returned to you.  Please post a zero point question here (take a look at the others; you'll see what to do):

We have a new feature installed in all questions on EE.
A "Delete Question" link is in the body of your question (the actual first post that is displayed).
Just clicking on that link will give us all of the information we need to properly handle your request - and - is a much simpler process for you.

There is a 'reason' block for you to complete and you can just insert "Self-answered" or "No Solution" (or any other reason you like) and we will start the process.

Please use that link in your future requests to close.
