The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Is a static IP an option?

01.07.2008 at 03:40PM PST, ID: 20604419
do you have both a wired and wireless connection? If a connection is aquiring address it shouldnt work...  oprn a cmd prompt (start... run... cmd) and type   ipconfig

It will give you a list of different adaptors ; for example, I see my LAN, WLAN, and bluetooth adaptors.

look for 1 that has an ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway - that one will be connecting you to the internet.

Yes I forgot about that.. you could be having your wireless connection trying to pull an IP via DHCP every once in a while while your IE and Outlook still work.

Or you could go Start->Connect To->Show All Connections.  If you have a wireless connection but do not use wireless you can Right-Click on that icon and Disable it.  Which if it is causing the problem your describing, it's icon in the system tray will disappear.

1.) No sure about Static IP but don't think so.
2.) No wireless.
3.) Network Connections shows only one line:
"Local Area Connection Lan or High Speed Internet   Acquiring Network Address     Broadcom NetXtreme57"

4.) Here's the ipconfig I took out the addresses because I am not sure if that is a security risk.
"C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>ipconfig/all

Silly question, but have you double clicked the icon in the tray, and selected the properties tab? It should give you the adapter info (just to make sure it is the Broadcom you have installed, and not a phantom....

So you dont have a "Local Area Connection 1"?  What about in Device Manager.. under Network Adapters?  how many devices listed there?

01.07.2008 at 07:20PM PST, ID: 20605716
Properties: Broadcom NetXtreme 5700 "working properly".

By the way I can fix this ie make the icon disappear from the tray by right click & "fixing it" somehow.
What I am interested in is why it is doing that and why it will reappear later or maybe the next day.

01.07.2008 at 07:25PM PST, ID: 20605739
Device Manager shows only one, the Broadcom.
Device Manager shows all working OK.

Are you sure it isnt a dropped connection somehow, and you are not ACTIVELY browsing when this occurs?

Try pulling an IPCONFIG /all when this appears and report back.....

Or simply keep a ping 4.2.2.2 -t in the backgound, and see if the pings stop when this happens....

Wonder if this would happen behind a router as well? I would think not......

Looks like it's physical connection problem.

1. It's not the best idea to connect windows computer directly to a cable modem
2. When computer looses signal in the ethernet for a moment it will keep old IP ant try to renew it at the same time.
3. Comcast may have flood control, so it will allow limited number of DHCP requests from the same MAC address and Windows will throw this balloon.

I'd recommend to get some sort of cheap consumer router and hide your computer behind it. Or just disable balloons.
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
2. Navigate to the following subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
3. Right-click the right pane, create a new DWORD value, and then name it EnableBalloonTips.
4. Double-click this new entry, and then give it a hexadecimal value of 0.
5. Quit Registry Editor. Log off Windows, and then log back on.
These steps disable all Notification Area balloon tips for this user. There is no way to disable balloon tips for specific programs only.

I did have a dropped connection today while logged into an active connection. It could have happened at that time today.
Looks like johnb6767 "dropped connection" & tvman 's #2  is it.
I will keep this question open for a while or couple of days & call Comcast & then do points.
I didn't give away any security with the physical address above?

01.07.2008 at 08:31PM PST, ID: 20605983
No, It's well known Comcast IP block prefix, so don't worry, there are lots of hosts out there with the same prefix
