The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Network Card issues on a HP DL380 server, not showing up in Device Manager
Hi,
I have major problems with the network cards on a DL380 with WIndows SBS installed.

The adapters were originally showing up and working, however, whenever the server rebooted it would ask for certain drivers and then fail because it said the failed - however, this did not affect the network, as it was the Virutal Bus Adapter that was failing - the actual adapters were installed and running. In an attempt to fix this I removed both network adapters and rebooted into safe mode. Upon doing this, the network adapters are no longer even detected. There is no 'Network Adapters' in Device manager and it is not picking them up. I have removed and am about to reinstall the HP Support Pack - but can't see how this will resolve things?

When I click View Show Hidden Devices in Device Manager, I see a couple of Network adapters but these are old (ghost) adapters that I cannot remove - when I do it says they may be needed to boot the server. I have googled around and the only thing I can see is that maybe the TCP stack is corrupt. I followed the netsh winsock reset command and have had no luck.

Can anybody help me? This is a live server and it is 9PM here - I need to get the server back on line before business starts tomorrow.

Thanks!

Some more on this, after installing the HP Support Pack the adapters reappeared - so I am back online, however, the same popups are still coming up. asking for Virtual Bus drivers. I have tried different drivers, however, at the end of it, it still says error occured.

Further to this, after putting the HP Support Pack 7.91 back on, the adapters are showing up as Local Area Connection 9 and Local Area Connection 10 - so there are some stale nics there somewhere still.

The Server is a HP 380 G5

OK so I spoke to soon - after installing the drivers and rebooting the server - the NICs have disappeared again.

02.15.2008 at 12:23AM PST, ID: 20900104
So I put the latest HP NCU on the server and then rebooted and I now have my NICs back - however I am still seeing these N373i Virtual Bus Adapters

02.15.2008 at 12:24AM PST, ID: 20900110
Further to that - I found this page
http://woosie-uk.blogspot.com/2007/01/how-to-fix-failed-hp-network.html

But I cannot follow the steps because it will not let me remove the old NICs from 'Network Adapters'

here are some of the errors and screens that have been popping up

You may need to do this at the registry level.

What error do you get when trying to remove the Ghost NICs ?

I hope this helps !

Did you try to use Safe mode again to remove the drivers, following the instructions from your link ?

I hope this helps !

yes, I have tried safe mode. and still the same thing. the error I get is in network4.png in the pic above.

i have gone intot the registry into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ Tcpip\Parameters\adapters and cleaned them out. Then rebooted and had no luck.

Hi all,

http://h71028.www7.hp.com/enterprise/cache/461231-0-0-0-121.html

You can check if your DL380 G? is compatibel to Win SBS.
Only for G5 is compatibel.

Regards

thanks for the input, however, it is a DL380 G5 that I have running Windows 2003 SBS

You may need a new install, or to remove All the hardware entries in the registry and let it rebuild.

In addition, you may need to physically remove some INF and driver files beforehand.

Not fun.

02.22.2008 at 12:08AM PST, ID: 20955417
A new install isnt really an option. Being SBS - and with over 50 users connected to the server, it is going to be a nightmare (half of those users are out on the road).

Regarding the hardware entriies in the registry - sounds like a good idea, but where are they?

You would need to check the entries in the device manager, remove the associated driver files and INF files.

For the registry, you could delete the entire hardware subkey, and let windows rediscover everything- Drastic, but useful in cases like this  if all else fails.

Other options are to do a SWING reinstall, saving all the AD and mail box stuff, and reinstalling the data back onto the same server

Accepted Solution

Did you get a fix for this? We have a 2003 R2 server running Exchange that has lost it's NICs 2 nights straight. We have already had the motherboard replaced by HP.

03.11.2008 at 02:23PM PDT, ID: 21100528
i got my nics back after re-installing support pack 7.91a, however was still receiving the strange popups for drivers. these have recently stopped, however, i am scared to reboot - so will have to wait and see to be certain. i think it could be to do with teaming or something? or an old driver?

03.11.2008 at 02:26PM PDT, ID: 21100552
"removed the associated driver files and INF files" then applied new ones. messages have stopped popping up. reboot will be the ultimate test

I had the same problem with the HPNC373i NIC on a DL380i ,Property pages were locked and no configuration was possible. I tried uninstalling the nics. I couldn't reinstall I got f"File not found errors"
After several hours on the phone with HP suport installing every driver they had, updating the firmware and trying workarounds they suggested such as reinstalling the virtual devices they suggested a reinstall of the os. It was not an option as this was my exchange server. I was able to get the nics functioning with a system state restore, but they were still not configurable. I ended up replacing the old IP's in the registry with the new IP info and finally got the address change. I still cannot configure the nics through the properties pages and HP concedes that there is no fix.
The main caveat is to do a system state backup before uninstalling these nics on a production server.

04.22.2008 at 02:59PM PDT, ID: 21415972
We have a similar issue with a 380 G5, running SBS 2003 R1 - the nics seems to install soundly enough, although in device manager there's a yellow exclamation against the two nics. We used Acronis TrueImage to move SBS from a flaky Siemens Primergy box to the G5, everything has gone swimmingly so far, apart from  the nic dectection/drive issue.

I've tried most nic drivers, new and old, also the latest carepacks - but sadly, to no avail. Reinstalling the OS from scratch is not a option for us. I'll give HP support a call tomorrow, and feedback any developments.

Paul
