The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Opening Ports on Computer
Tags: Microsoft Exchange, Exchange 2003
I need help opening ports on my exchange server.  I installed the BlackBerry enterprise Small Buisness version, and I am unable to send emails from the blackberry.  I suspect that my exchange server is dropping the connection over the port 3101.  I am able to recieve emails just fine, and I am positive it is not my Firewall.

From a local computer, when I attempt to "telnet localserveripaddress 3101" I get a could not connect to host, connection failed.

Windows Firewall is off, completley disabled.  I do not get "settings" tab under TCP/IP properties, meaning ICF is disabled.  Under Options, TCP/IP filter is set to permet all.

Hello,

which IP address is "localserveripaddress" exactly ?
Maybe you are using the wrong destination IP-Address.

If ICF is off then it cannot be the local Server ...

Well, the local IP address is 63.72.248.125.  I'm not sure what you mean by ICF is off.  The "settings" button is not available as described here, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308127

Windows Firewall service is disabled.

sorry ... ICF is the "Internet connection firewall" - and it seems you switched it off.
Why are you using this ip-address ?
When you want to connect to the Blackberry Servers on the internet, you should
enter the IP-Addresses from them.
This would be:

srp.us.blackberry.net

if you are in USA

If you are not in USA you can find your address here:

By the original question, it's not clear whether you installed BES on your Exchange server...?!

It's not actually the exchange server that uses an outgoing port 3101, its your BES server, that makes an outgoing connection to srp.na.blackbery.net in order to function.

If you installed Blackberry Enterprise Server directly on your Exchange Server, I would suggest not doing that.

The BES server communicates with an Exchange server through a MAPI profile.  So, it acts just like an Outlook client.  Except of course, it has more permissions, and does a heck of a lot more traffic.

also, in any event, if you have SRP connection drops, you will see Event ID 50096 and 50097 logged in the application event log of where the BES server is located.  if you see that, you have issues with maintaining an outgoing connection.

Since you mentioned you have issues sending emails from your blackberry, i would verify that the BESAdmin account has proper permissions to all your mailboxes.  the BES install guide for your version of BES (available on blackberry.net's support area) will have instructions on how to check that.

Hope I've helped you.

It's Blackberry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange version.  That's why it's on the exchange server.  I do not see any event ID's of 50096 or 50097 taking place.   According to the documentation, If I understand correctly, I need to allow traffic through the firewall on port 3101 to allow communication between the blackberry and the BES server.  I added the rule to the firewall, which seems to be fine, but cannot seem to be able to open it on the exchange server.  When I attempt to telnet over 3101 to the server, I recieve a connection refused.

Hi.
Thanks for the clarification.  However,  Blackberry Enterprise Server software does not need to go DIRECTLY on the Exchange server.   It can be on another server.   I believe since version 3.6 it's recommended NOT to install BES directly on an exchange server.  If both Exchange and BES are on the same machine, and you are using local MSDE as the db for BES i would seriously recommend moving it off.  But anyway,

The connection from the BES (where ever you have it installed) is actually initiated outgoing.  connecting from your workstation to the exchange server tests nothing important.

Here are some ways to test that an SRP connection has been established, or that it CAN establish.

-In the application "Backberry Server Configuration" go to the Blackberry Router tab and try the "Test ?Network Connection" button.  If it fails, you'll need to look at your firewall config again, and verify you are connecting to the right SRP address for your region.

-open a CMD prompt on the BES server and type netstat   .  the list will show all connections from and to the server.  if it's your exchange server as well you are going to see a LONG list.  somewhere in there should be your 3101 connection.

But again, if you are able to receive messages on your blackberry and not send, I would:
verify that the BESAdmin account has proper permissions to all your mailboxes.  the BES install guide for your version of BES (available on blackberry.net's support area) will have instructions on how to check that.

Read here as reference:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912918

also, here is a video from blackberry.com on how to verify the sendas permissions for the BESadmin account.  If the BESadmin account cannot "sendas" for every BES user, then you won't be able to send emails.  See what i mean?  Actions performed by blackberry users on their devices, are actually performed by the BESadmin account in their mailbox on behalf of them.
