Question

Cannot access sites that require logon....might be https\\ only

Asked by: dbase118

Recently had a Mal-Ware issue that I cleaned up with Mal-WareBytes. I have run subsequent scans that come up clean. However, I am having an issue with accessing ceertain sites. All the sites I cant get to require a logon (not necesarilly https:// sites) but it is not every log-in site.

For example I was able to log into EE fine, but I cannot log into Facebook or Yahoo or Hotmail.

Tried to sift through the web but cant seem to find anything that works to get it back to working order.
Please help!  Thanks in advance for your time!

Can you access any secure sites at all?
Try opening a command prompt and registering softpub.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
Also go to the security tab in internet options and default your internet zone settings.

Do you have any toolbars installed? I've seen AVG's toolbar do similar things.

AOL (which I dont ever really use) seems to work.  But that seems the only https site I can pull up. Some of the sites dont actually say https:\\ but guessing they are since its not the main page taht fails but the login attempt.

Tried the softpub.dll re-register.

Have Google installed but this is a recent occurence after I cleaned up some Mal-Ware

I'm surprised registering softpub and rebooting didn't help. I've seen that exact behavior on systems before..even down to the aol part, and that often helps. Have  you double checked that ssl 2.0 and 3.0 are enabled under the security section of internet options-->Advanced tab ?

May not have rebooted afterwards...will retry this evening.

All SSL versions are checked.

Make sure all instances of iexplore are closed when you do it too.

What error do you get trying to access secure sites?... Page cannot be displayed?

by: dorkestraPosted on 2008-12-15 at 15:17:16ID: 23179040

Forgot to mention... make sure the date and time are correct on your system.

There are several things that can be looked at from here.  Try to post as much behavioral information as you can...the more info the better.  Look for any errors in the application, system, and security logs that may be pertinient, make sure your firewall isn't blocking 443 for some reason... lots of things can cause problems accessing secure sites.

In addition to softpub, you can try registering wintrust.dll and initpki.dll.

Make sure the following policy isn't enabled:
Control Pannel > Administrative tools > Local Security Settings
Local Policies > Security Options
Use FIPS compliant algorythms for encryption" - Make sure is not set to enabled.

I have run the winsockfix program and it still does not fix the problem.

I do not know if this is relevant Im just a simple MS Project Guru....I certainly appreciate your help. Starting to wonder if I am doing more harm than good trying to fix it myself instead of just taking it to a PC Doc.

In an administrative command prompt try running these 2 commands

netsh int ip reset log.txt
netsh winsock reset

by: dorkestraPosted on 2008-12-15 at 19:13:36ID: 23180718

What OS are you running? If it's xp that command may have to be netsh winsock reset catalog

For XP, there's always the good old winsock fix too... migh wanna backup / export hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\winsock
and
hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\winsock

prior to running...

that second backup key should've been

hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\winsock2

dorkestra,

Sorry I have been away from this question for some time. Lots of little things popping up before the end of the year.  I have tried all the suggestions and still have no resolution. I have decided to take it in and have someone else look at it before I damage anything any further.

I really appreciate all your time and effort and will reward you the points on that basis. Thanks for your patience and excellent suggestions.
