Question

Port 80 seems to be blocked

Asked by: dkreines

I have a vert strange problem and I am hoping somebody can shed some light.  Here is the situation:
1) I can no longer use IE or FireFox to view any URL that uses the http: . Right now I am using an old machine (on the same router, BTW) that I still have - not the laptop where the problem is.
2) I can ping sites such as www.google.com, www.yahoo.com, etc. by name, so DNS seems OK
3) I can use IE and FireFox to view URLs that use FTP, e,g, such as ftp://releases.mozilla.org.
4) I can also access sites uisng HTTPS:, so the SSL port is OK.
5) All this started about 24 hours ago when I was surfing 'strange and wondorous videos' from gosh knows where - fairly ordinary stuff. Yep, the last site wanted to install some type of software, a viewer i think, and I think I clicked to appropriate 'no don't you dare' button, but...
6) Get HTTP: error 12029 when run the diagnostics offered via IE; they confirm that i cannot connect to http: , but can to FTP:// and HTTPS:// .
7) I have tried disabling the Windows Firewall - no luck.
8) I have been looking over the list of 'processes' looking for something fishy running, but have not yet found anything - NOT that I woud necessarily have noticed it.
9. I have another machine on the same router and it is fine, so I don't think the router is blocking port 80

I'm out of ideas.  Help??

Hi dkreines,

To save some time I would perform a "System Restore"  prior to the 24hrs you spoke of:-) If this does not fix the issue we can proceed to try different things to solve the issue.

check if the IE is configured to use proxy for http (Tools -> internet options)

I would suggest updating your anti-virus software and running a full system scan. I suggest you boot into safe mode to do the full scan.

Another option is to download this app (http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html?cdlPid=10781312) using the other PC and running it on your PC.

I would use housecall from www.trend.com, choose full scan. I think you got some virus or malware which is messing with your computer.

Thanks for the responses so far.  I have already done a system restore as far back as possible, and it didn't make a difference.  Both HTTP and HTTP Proxy are checking in Internet Options, and also this problem exists in both IE and Firefox, so it doesn;t appear to be an IE problem.  Multiple malware scan have turned up nothing.  What next?

Try this app and let me know: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Also try connecting to sites when booted in Safe Mode (with networking support) and let me know.

>9. I have another machine on the same router and it is fine, so I don't think the router is blocking port 80

I was wondering if the system above that seems to work is a directly connected  (wired) patch cable to the router?
Also, is the computer in question (having the issue) is a wireless connection? <-- If so I would directly connect to the router (cable) and see if the issue is still here?

Perhaps a router reset is in order if the above proves true??
