The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

WINS problem? nbtstat -n conflict
Tags: conflict, wins, nbtstat
I changed my subnets last weekend and have still not fully recovered.  I have 5 servers, of whic 2 are DC's.  Both are also DNS and WINS servers.  The PDC is named as IsDomainMaster in the browser registry.  Once I changed subnets, we had some intermittent browsing problems.  I looked at the WINS database and of course there were statics that referred to my servers under their old subnet addresses.  I deleted anything that referred to the former subne, and rebooted both servers.  Neither one can browse.  browstat shows the PDC has "no domain browsing".  browstat on the other DC says "can't get to the browser list on (PDC)".  FInally I checked nbtstat and it shows:

LAN 1:
Node IpAddress: [10.10.1.34] Scope Id: []
                NetBIOS Local Name Table
       Name               Type         Status
    ---------------------------------------------
    MYPDC          <00>  UNIQUE      Conflict
    MYDOMAIN         <00>  GROUP       Registered
    MYDOMAIN         <1C>  GROUP       Registered
    MYPDC          <20>  UNIQUE      Conflict
    MYDOMAIN         <1B>  UNIQUE      Registered
    MYPDC          <03>  UNIQUE      Conflict
    ADMINISTRATOR  <03>  UNIQUE      Registered
    MYDOMAIN         <1E>  GROUP       Registered
    MYDOMAIN         <1D>  UNIQUE      Registered
    ..__MSBROWSE__.<01>  GROUP       Registered

I deleted the statics from the WINS database that referred to these records - conflicts still show up!  This machine has 2 NICs but only one enabled.  I'm stumped.  --Dale

Have you tried clearing the entire WINS data base and all active registrations? Can ypu post ipconfig /all from both the WINS server. Another thing you might try is deleteing the wins replication partners from both servers, then deleteing all wins entries on both server and recreating your wins replication partnets at that point.

From the comment, it sounds like it's ok to wipe out all WINS records - they get recreated?
Here is something I have never been sure of:  I have two WINS servers and I can see each database from each server, which makes it look like I have 4 separate databases.  How do I edit the WINS database?  Can I just edit one (for example the PDC database on the PDC itself)?  I have tried that and then done a push replication but it seems i can never be sure - I end up editing each server FROM each server so I change the data 4 times - this can't be right... what's the correct way to do this?  I'll get the ipconfig later today.  Thanks

10.26.2007 at 04:15AM PDT, ID: 20154544
Have you established WINS replication between the two servers? I agree, if the replication is working properly you should only see one database and anything you do to it should automatically replicated between servers. The WINS database is dynamic. It is OK to delete everything. It will rebuild automatically.

10.26.2007 at 04:36AM PDT, ID: 20154594
You have me lost. I have the DCs on the same network. I opened WINS on one of them and only see one database. Where are you going to see four different databases?

10.26.2007 at 04:56AM PDT, ID: 20154675
Sorry to be confusing...each WINS applet offers you both the local DC and the remote DC (because I used "add server" and added the other DC).  Conssidering that I can look at them both from each server, it looks like four separate sets of records... make sense?

10.26.2007 at 05:02AM PDT, ID: 20154702
Yes. That cleared up the confusion. Have you established WINS replication between the two servers?

10.26.2007 at 05:20AM PDT, ID: 20154789
Yes - that's actually been fine for a long time - it's just recently when I changed the subnetting that browsing problems began.  I have cleaned up the records am planning for a reboot in the next hour or so.  Thanks

10.26.2007 at 05:23AM PDT, ID: 20154812
Good. Then what you do to one database should replicate to the other. I would delete all WINS entries and reboot. You are on the right track ...
Accepted Solution

10.26.2007 at 06:51AM PDT, ID: 20155482
Some progress.  I actually did not kill all the WINS records - just the ones that looked like they might be at fault here.  NOW - all my servers can browse the domain except one - my exchange server.  It has browsing enabled and the TCP/IP settings are correct (I checked them three times).  It can't seem to find the domain.  I can access any server by using \\server.  Should I kill all the WINS recs for this server and reboot it?

10.26.2007 at 07:47AM PDT, ID: 20155989
Well .... In my opinion trying to selectively delete Wins entries is way too combursom and you might just miss one. I am still a fan of "nuke then all". As far as the one server not being able to browse that sounds like a netbios issue. When you do a ipconfig /all on it is the node type Hybrid? Can you post an ipconfig /all from that server for me?

10.26.2007 at 08:09AM PDT, ID: 20156224
Ok - maybe this is related.  Beginning when I changed the subnetting, which required me to modity the TCP/IP settings on each server (static addresses), everytime I leave the property sheet, I get the warning that says something like "you should not have two default gateways, are you sure you want to do this".  I don't get why this is happening.  All the servers have two nics and the 2nd nic is disabled on each server.  I have triple-checked the IP settings, and in fact the network has been fine (except for the browsing).  Are there some reg settings i should delete that hang over from the last static addresses?  I don't think I should be getting this error...
I will try to get the ipconfig once I can reboot at lunchtime.  Thanks

10.26.2007 at 08:18AM PDT, ID: 20156330
Did you zero out the IP settings on the second NICS before disableing them?

10.26.2007 at 08:33AM PDT, ID: 20156471
Unless you mean doing something in the registry, you can't zero them out.  They have to be sensible addresses/netmask, etc.  or will not take the input.  i did set them to the same subnet and def gw as the primary nic - still get the "more than one def gateway" error.  I have had these 2nd nics set for years with alternate subnet info and as long as they're disabled, no problems.  This began when I changed subnets...

Use a text editor to open up and delete all Host records in the i386/host file. Save the 127.0.0.1 host record.

Sounds like your computer is using host A records because there is no DNS server at home.

10.26.2007 at 12:25PM PDT, ID: 20158348
I was able to find the errant registry keys and delete them.  All is well - the browsing is instantaneous and the WINS database looks fine.  The exchange server came back after deleting the statics and rebooting.  I have only one static entry remaining in WINS which is Domain Controller (1Ch) and it has both the DC's listed in its properties (although I see that it's owned by my BDC).  Is that correct?  If so, then I think I'm past the worst of it.  Thanks.
