not alot to go on.  can you supply more infor - how are you connected to the web, does email work?
what about other websites?

can you turn off 'friendly error messages' and tell me what you see?

to turn off 'frindly error messages'  - open browser - goto tools - internet options - advanced
then scroll down the list to the browsing section and "untick" the "show friendly errro messages"
then close all the dialog bozxes and restart the interent explorer and try microsfot website again.

also download and companies browser (FireFox or Googles Chrome) install and try the microsoft website. they give different error messages to help

I have a laptop connected to a LAN through a router connected to a Satilite Modum.
My LAN is connected to the internet.  The computer that I am presently on is on the internet through my LAN.
My Laptop is connected to the LAN, but will not connect to the Internet.  When I diagnose the connection I get this message: ""www.microsoft.com" is not set up to establish a connection on port"World Wide Web (HTTP) with this computer."
I opened my browzer and unclicked "show friendly errro messages".  I still can't get on-line.
I think that there is something wrong with my system.

okey dokey, if your wouldn't mind running some of the following tests:

can you ping your router by IP address over the LAN?

If you do Start>Run> and then in the Run box type CMD (Or just bring up a command prompt)

type:

ipconfig /all

This will display the settings you have for your network adaptor so at least you can see what's going on.

can you ping google.com or similar from the command prompt? Sometimes its browser settings that stop it self from working.

Let me know and I'll walk you through...

Sci-Fi-Si:,
No.  I don't know how to ping a site.  I would be interested to know how.
One thing I forgot to say is the Laptop that I'm having trouble with is running Vista.
And it use to connect.
Thanks,
Bill

okey dokey, no probs.
These are some dead handy tools when it comes to diagnosing network problems.
On Vista its just click the Start button, then type CMD <enter>. You'll see the text in a little box just above the Start button.

This will bring up a black window which is a command prompt.
Type:

ipconfig /all

You will see a list of the properties of your network adaptors scroll past and it will look somthing like this:

Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
   Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom 802.11 Multiband Network Adapter

   Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-1E-4C-8C-BD-A2
   DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
   Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
   Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::b9da:18b3:e15f:3cf8%11(Preferred)
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.xxx.4(Preferred)
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 04 September 2008 18:35:30
   Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 14 September 2008 09:45:59
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.xxx.1
   DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.xxx.2
   DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.xxx.2
   NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

Don't PANIC!

In the list you should see the line that says Default Gateway: with a value like 192.168.xxx.xxx
If you don't that's the first problem found, which means your network adaptor is not getting assigned a value from your router.

You should be able to ping this address from the command line by typing:

ping 192.168.xxx.xxx (whatever the address is)

Before we get too ahead of ourselves here, you can see the line where it has DHCP Enabled. . . . . . .. : Yes
If your computer does not say this, it means your network card settings are not set to automatic.

If is says DHCP Enabled.... No

Then you will need to open the properties of your network card, click on the TCP/IP protocol and set the radio buttons that say 'get address automatically'

Let me know how you do and I'll talk you through the rest...

if its Vista - try a system restore
press - start - all programs - accessories - system tools - system restore
and follow the wizard - choose a day when it last worked.

by: abhxPosted on 2008-09-08 at 21:08:44ID: 22424223

I've restored twice and I apparently can't go back far enough.
Sci-Fi Si
I did the ipconfig and everything seem to be OK  as far as you discribed.
I haven't pinged it yet.  I'll do that tomorrow.
Now I can't print from my laptop.  I'm begining to suppect my router.
My LAN Map still shows my Laptop.
My daughter says I should use the Windows Network Manager.  I'm using Network Magic.  What do you think?
Thanks,
Bill

by: Sci-Fi-SiPosted on 2008-09-09 at 03:09:01ID: 22425665

I can't say I used Network Magic as I do all my checks manually.

The ping command from the command prompt is a sure fire test to see what you can access locally as well as the WWW.

In your DNS settings are incorrect you will not be able to ping eg. google.com but yoy will be able to ping your router (possibly 192.168.0.1 but routers do come with different IP addresses) This is why you need to check your Default Gateway address which is the IP your router is on.

Could you send me a screen dump of your set up and I should be able to tell straight away if your config looks ok.

To do this type:

Click Start. In the box above type cmd. This will bring up the command prompt that you can type in to.

At the command prompt type:

ipconfig / all > c:\network.txt

This will show you nothing on screen as the output from this command will pipe the output to a file that you will find on your C drive in the route directory. Its a text file called network.txt

Please attach the file here and I will have a look at it for you :)

Sci-Fi-Si:
This is not exactly what you said, but I think it is what you want.
If not I don't know how to access the route directory, but I can learn.

Sci-Fi-Si:
Here is what you want.  I searched for it and it came up.  This is without the Laptop connected to the LAN.

by: Sci-Fi-SiPosted on 2008-09-10 at 03:08:32ID: 22436780

Okey dokey, it looks as though your wireless card is set to 'automatically' get its IP addr.
What's the output when it is connected to the LAN or WLAN. I can talk you through some simple tests that should get this working.

by: abhxPosted on 2008-09-10 at 11:07:13ID: 22441176

Sci-Fi-Si:
My laptop won't connect to my LAN.  I'm not sure now that it ever did.
I can't connect to the internet with the Ethernet cable connected directly into the Laptop either.
I'll try it that way.
Try this it's with the Eithernet cable plugged directly into the Laptop.
The Laptop does not acknowledge the modum.
Bill

Looks good.
Thanks, Bill
