Question

Does WINS receives entry for hosts in different subnets !!!

Asked by: JatinHemant

Hi friends !

I just want to clear my  doubts regarding WINS.

Please have a look at the file that I have attached. In this file PC-02 and PC-03 are on Subnet 1. They are configured to make their entry in WINS (by default H-node) and so they will make their entry in WINS. (no doubt as they are in the same broadcast domain)

I just want to clear my doubt whether PC-03 (that is in Subnet 2) will be able to make entry in WINS (in Subnet 1) or not, as they are in different broadcast domain. And I don't have any WINS Server in Subnet 2 that will replicate data from WINS in Subnet 1.

Regards.

Nope it won't be able to populate itself into the WINS, because that would require broadcasts (which won't pass through the router).  However, PC03 could still do lookups directly on the WINS, if you point it there, because then that'll be regular unicast traffic, which will route through the router successfully.  Also, you could manually add an entry for PC03 in the WINS server, and then the other OCs will be able to find it too.  I hope that makes sense.

Thanks for your reply. When you say:

**** However, PC03 could still do lookups directly on the WINS, if you point it there, because then that'll be regular unicast traffic***

Means, if I add WINS Server address in TCP/IP Settings of PC03, then this PC03 will communicate with WINS (As Routing is there) and then manually adding PC03 entry in WINS will also enable PC01 and PC02 to communicate with PC03 by name.

Am I getting right ?

And What if I install a secondary WINS Server in Subnet 2 and replicate it with Primary WINS Server in Subnet 1 !

Then, I understand that PC03 will make entry in WINS (in subnet 2) and that WINS will add this entry in WINS (in subnet 1) when replicating database. Please make it clear.

Regards.

Yes you got it right.  If you specify the TCP/IP settings on PC03, and then it can do WINS lookups and find the subnet1 computers.  And yes, if you manually add PC03 to the WINS, then subnet1 computers can find it (as long as PC03 has a static IP).

Yep a secondary WINS would be fine, and they can exchange information like this http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc783226(WS.10).aspx

WINS servers are overkill with only 3 computers in your network. You could just use a static lmhosts file and distribute it to all computers.  I'm guessing that you actually have more computers, though.

There is another option if you don't want to install another WINS.  You can make a DHCP server send updates to a WINS server.  I can't remember the details on it, though.

Thanks for your reply...

Yes...you are right. I have more computers (around 200 in the organization where I work). The network diagram that I uploaded here is just  a sample one.

Well...let me award the points. Thanks again for participation.

Regards.

Hi there,

For future reference - I'm afraid theras2000's comments are slightly incorrect. WINS clients use unicast traffic to resolve AND to register. So you do not need a WINS server in each subnet.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/119493

Note description of P node (WINS client behaviour) -

>> When using p-node name resolution, broadcasts are NOT used for name registration or name resolution. Instead, all systems register themselves with a NetBIOS Name Server (NBNS) upon start up.

A H node client used P node behavious followed by B node (broadcast), but only broadcasts when direct comms with the WINS server fails.
