Question

DHCP client could not obtain an IP address error message

Asked by: Philipk

Dear all,

I recently installed NT4 SP6a on my IBM 300GL with on board "Crystal Ethernet" LAN. I installed the drivers for the network card during the OS installation. When I installed the card it asked me for a serial number, however it also said that this was only required if 2 cards from the same manufacturer were installed, I only have one so I guess I don't need to put it in. In any case I don't know what the serial number is and I haven't found the "crystal ethernet" utility that can tell you what it is (this serial is different from the mac address I think).

Anyway, once NT has loaded there is a pause and then this error message comes up:

"The DHCP client could not obtain an IP address
If you want to see DHCP messages in the future, choose YES. Otherwise choose NO."

When I check the event viewer there is a DHCP error with these details:
"DHCP failed to obtain a lease for the card with network address 006094ecb32d. The following error occured:
The semaphore timeout period has expired."

Other computers on my network are working fine.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Philip

Have you installed or re-installed any networking components since applying SP6a? If so, remember to re-apply the service pack.

Also, can you configure the PC with a static ip address just to make sure you've got the correct driver and that the card is working?

I checked my DHCP server There are available IP address (94 of them!).

I haven't installed any new components since SP6 , the computer does allow me to configure for manual IP address. If I run IPCONFIG it reports the specifed details.

Thanks

Philip

With the ip address set to manual, if I ping  LOCALHOST I get replies.

set address manually and try to ping dhcp server to test connectivity

OK, I've solved the problem! All the time I was looking for a driver/OS issue when in fact it lay with my physical network.

I just set the problem PC to manual IP, then set another of my PC's to manual IP. I then connected them with a crossover cable and in the system tray connected - at 10mbps. Pinged them both successfully. The problem was in the network speed. As I connected them I realized that the IBM must have a 10mbps. The link between that PC and the server is as follows:

IBM (10mb) to hub (auto sensing 10/100 switched)
hub to up link on main hub
main hub to server (10/100mb)

and the problem was that the cable between the two hubs was connected to a 100mb on the main hub (not auto sensing in this case - 3 x 100mb and 2 x 10mb). Anyway, DHCP is working fine now, internet and local network. I just have to play around with the physical setup to see if I can get 100 and 10x running between the 2 hubs.

Thanks for your suggestions.
