The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Local profiles management

Asked by blueberryx in Windows NT Networking, Adobe Type Manager

Hi everybody,

We're currently planning an Active Directory implementation on our Win2K network. The thing is that we do it mostly for security/sharing issues and we want the network and the workstations to able to function properly if the DC shall ever fail. We are currently making up a 'LifeBoat' procedure that must not take more than 30 mins to implement entreprise-wide (we have 5 servers, 50 workstations).

I have two problems regarding the Win2K user profiles:

1. Currently, users have local profiles on their machines that includes their preferences, network drives and - the most important - outlook express mails (a typical user OE folder is a few hundred megabytes). Their folder name under 'Documents And Settings' looks like 'Sales-01'. When they will log for the first time on the domain a new profile will be created ('user.domain'). Can I tell the 'domain user' to use the old profile instead of creating a new one? And if so how can I batch do it using command line tools?

2. As I told you we're setting up a 'LifeBoat' procedure. If the DC fail, users won't be able to connect to domain and we'll have to connect locally using a 'lifeboat' user account. We need to make a logon script that will 1) Map all the netdrives to the network shares instead of the distributed file system and 2) tell the 'lifeboat' user account to use the same local profile that he used when he was connected to the domain.

FYI, there are no roaming/mandatory profiles on the DC. All profiles are local.

I'd like to have informations on how windows manage profiles, where is the association between username-profile, and how to make a batch script that will assign a profile folder to a user account (that might not have been logged yet).

Thank you.
