Question

XP Pro and XP Home File Sharing Nightmare

Asked by: rpdmathe

I have a laptop running XP home and a desktop running XP pro. I am desperately trying to get them to work.
The laptop can see the desktop in the workgroup, but cannot connect, due to permissions. The desktop cannot
view the workgroup as it cannot find the server. I don't have a server. Both computers have the same workgroup,
and both can access the internet via a broadband router. Neither has Internet Firewall. Have done everything
I can think of including most of the support things listed on this site, and it STILL WON't WORK!!!!!!!! HELP!!!!

The desktop when attempting to view the workgroup:
Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator
of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

The laptop says somethinig like you don't have permission to access this resource.

by: shivsaPosted on 2004-01-03 at 12:34:12ID: 10034876

then check above links to set the permission correctly.

No good. tried all that.

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-03 at 12:43:02ID: 10034901

Seems as though Desktop is looking for a server in the workgroup to authenticate. There is no server. Is there a setting
to make it realise that there is no server?

by: shivsaPosted on 2004-01-03 at 12:45:59ID: 10034907

are they both have the same workgroup. u have said yes but still could u double check.

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-03 at 12:47:51ID: 10034911

Definitely. To make it easy I called it WORKGROUP

by: shivsaPosted on 2004-01-03 at 12:54:00ID: 10034928

Go to the computer that is NOT accessible over the network and right-click on "My Network Places"
then right-click on "Local Area Connection". This will bring up a menu; left-click on properties and this should bring
up the network components dialog box. In the middle you should have a protocol such as
TCP/IP and client for microsoft networks etc..., but you should also have File and Printer sharing in
that box and it should be checked as well. If it is not, you can add it by left-clicking on "Install" and go from there.
Hope that works!

have u seen the last link i posted.

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-03 at 13:06:27ID: 10034962

Now I can access the Workgroup on both computers, but the other one cannot be seen by either one :(

by: shivsaPosted on 2004-01-03 at 13:08:51ID: 10034964

what is the error message u are getting now.

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-03 at 13:15:47ID: 10034986

No error message, just can't see either computer.
Yep checked last link. Have already don ethat too

by: shivsaPosted on 2004-01-03 at 13:18:39ID: 10034999

i am assuming that there is no firewall issue anywhere, even your router does not have any firewall installed in
it. check this too.

also now u can see the workgroup, could u try all the steps one more time, like permissions and setting up file sharing.

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-03 at 13:19:43ID: 10035003

Have just unshared the shared documents and shared them again. Now we are back to square one. Can see the
desktop on the laptop but cannot connect. But can view workgroup on desktop but laptop not visible

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-03 at 13:20:37ID: 10035009

There is a firewall on the router, but an external firewall not internal

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-03 at 13:22:16ID: 10035019

I cannot see what you mean about permissions. From reading what it says ont he links, when you file share in simple
file sharing, it sets the permissions for you under the ForceGuest. There is nowhere to add usernames

by: shivsaPosted on 2004-01-03 at 13:26:50ID: 10035026

there are 2 links.
one for XP home.
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/filesharing.htm
and this one for Xp pro.
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/index.htm

try these 2 link to setup from start.

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-03 at 13:42:30ID: 10035072

Could it have anything to do with the user on both computers has the same name?

by: shivsaPosted on 2004-01-03 at 13:44:10ID: 10035078

it has to be the same name and password.

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-03 at 13:51:15ID: 10035099

I don't want to disable simple file sharing, so there is no need to set paswwords or access restrictions according
to your last post

by: shivsaPosted on 2004-01-03 at 13:52:52ID: 10035103

yup thats true, no password.

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-03 at 13:56:48ID: 10035120

Or access restrictions, which means usernames as well doesn't it?

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-03 at 14:12:19ID: 10035168

OK, it has changed AGAIN.
Both computers are now saying......
Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator
of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network name cannot be found.

How can this be? The workgroup doesn't have a server!!!

by: shivsaPosted on 2004-01-03 at 14:19:59ID: 10035194

looks like u are missing very minor things somewhere.

i would say go step by step and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318030
then
304040 Description of File Sharing and Permissions in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=304040
and then double check with these 2.
XP home.
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/filesharing.htm
Xp pro.
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/index.htm

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-03 at 14:41:38ID: 10035260

OK, have done all that and have managed to map a network drive of the Laptop's Shared Docs onto the Desktop
system. However, the Workgroup still cannot be viewed. I cannot map a drive of the Desktop's Shared docs as
it says the network path could not be found.

Any more ideas?

by: shivsaPosted on 2004-01-03 at 14:44:48ID: 10035271

or u can just first try to add the XP to exiting network and then try file share.
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/addxp.htm

by: shivsaPosted on 2004-01-03 at 14:50:09ID: 10035288

also check this discussion.
http://forums.devshed.com/archive/34/2003/9/1/32461

few tips.

1. also check for  NetBIOS over TCP-IP enabled on the both XP box? It's hidden on the WINS tab of the TCP-IP setup.
2.  starting the windows explorer after every boot on both the system.

Done all that before
Looks like from your last post that many people are suffering from something similar. Don't know what to do now.
Any suggestions?

by: bbaoPosted on 2004-01-04 at 02:44:20ID: 10036732

hehe, just read the posts one by one, then try their suggestions one by one... ;)

ok, more specifically, i suggest youread those microsoft's official documentations at first, for general overview,
concepts and some specific instructions; then, if you still need step-by-step help, read those from
www.practicallynetworked.com as reference or guide.

if you still have problems or even in confusion, go back to here again. ;)

hope it helps,
bbao

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-04 at 03:49:09ID: 10036851

Have done all the steps from all of the posts. They are not helping. Where to from here?

by: bbaoPosted on 2004-01-04 at 04:04:24ID: 10036873

ok, i give a checklist of what you should do on both computers.:

0. ping each other well
1. netbios over tcpip is enabled
2. wins setting is blank
3. workstation service is running
4. server service is running
5. guest account is enabled
6. folders have been shared with proper share-level permissions, e.g. fullcontrol -> everyone
7. folders have been set with proper NTFS-level permissions, e.g. fullcontrol -> everyone

if you still have problems, please post your 'ipconfig /all' results of both computers at here.

hope it helps,
bbao

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-04 at 04:24:42ID: 10036908

OK, can ping ip address of both ok. Can ping laptop from desktop but cannot ping desktop from laptop using
computer name

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-04 at 04:37:42ID: 10036932

Have managed to map network drive using ip address. But still not accepting computer name. Is this a problem
with DHCP, and if so how do I remedy it?

by: rpdmathePosted on 2004-01-04 at 04:46:25ID: 10036947

DONE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There seems to be a clash between file sharing adn the Symantec Enterprise VPN Client Driver used for VPNs.
Have disabled that and it is now running happily!!!

by: bbaoPosted on 2004-01-04 at 04:47:03ID: 10036949

in fact, since you have only two computers at here, very simple network, so using LMHOSTS file is very easy way
for name resolution. dont forget to 'Enable LMHOSTS lookup' at network properites.

see the "Adding Static Clients to the Hosts File" part of following KB article:
How to Configure a Static Client for Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=kb;en-us;Q309642

if a command like below one works, then you have only name resolution problem left: :) use above way!

net use x: \\192.168.0.1\sharename

by: bbaoPosted on 2004-01-04 at 04:52:01ID: 10036960

congratulations!

by: bbaoPosted on 2004-01-04 at 05:22:54ID: 10037004

btw, if you could mention the VPN client program early, we could find the problem early, hehe :) ok, its the time to accept helpful comments, make this question as PAQ to tell other people dont forget to check VPN client when their XP file sharing does not work... :)

by: bbaoPosted on 2004-01-04 at 06:19:02ID: 10037111

thanks for your pints. it looks i should add "make sure any VPN client uninstalled or disabled" as the 1st item of my checklist. cheers, bbao

I'm having same problem, have done and checked everything in this thread, but still no luck.

I have Windows XP Home on a PC and XP Pro on a laptop.
The PC is hard wired to my Linksys, the laptop is WiFi.

I have workgroup set to "MSHOME" on both machines.
I can see both machines from both computers.
I can access my shares from the laptop that are on the PC.
I get prompted for a password when trying to acccess the shares on the laptop from the PC.
Any ideas?

I have only 2 machines both running XP Home and have the same problem (sort of). I can actually connect to the internet from the other (main) computer but cannot share files even though both machines recognise the connection. I get the "permission" error message. I even have the hands under the drives to indicate that they are shared. I cannot work out how to get permission.

This discussion occurred 12 months ago but it addresses an issue I've had over the the last three months.

I tried many things but what really worked for me was:

     * Turning off the 'Internet Firewall Protection' on both Win XP Home and Win XP Pro systems. Firewall protection seems to occur in a variety of places. The Internet firewall protection is accessed as follows:

     1. Click on Network Connection in the Control Panel window.
     2. Right click on the the network connection that connects the XP-Home and XP-Pro computers and choose Properties.
     3. Click on the Advanced tab and click on the Settings button.
     4. Click on the Off button and click on Okay.
     5. Click on Okay again.

You can safely work with this firewall protection off as your Internet connection will be through another device that should have its firewall enabled. For example, an Internet router, a PC acting as the Internet router.

If you remove one of the computers from your 'lan' then you may have to turn on the Internet Firewall again. You would have to do this if you'd added say the XP-Home system to your network to do some maintenenace on it.
