Changing Server/Domain Administrator Password
Hi!
Our small organization has one server running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. I'd like to change the domain wide administrator's password.
We have Microsoft Exchange 2003 and Brighstor ARCserve Backup running on the server. I think I know how to change the administrator's password in ARCserve Backup's management console, but was wondering about Exchange.
Can someone give me step by step instructions on the best procedure to change the server/domain password for the administrator?
Thanks!

Are you using the Active Directory Users and Groups mmc snap-in to change caroot. Is it even listed there? Additionally, if you use a utitlity to run your backups, or if they are listed in your Scheduled Tasks Control Panel (Start->Control Panel->Scheduled Tasks) you will need to change the stored password in each scheduled task.
Now, if 'caroot' is not listed as a domain user, then it may be a local user only on a particular machine. In that case you'll have to change the 'caroot' password on the machine that holds that acount.

Hi carlajasminelewis,
I don't see any "caroot" user in the Active Directory.
I have a screenshot of the message and area I'm talking about in regards to not being able to change the "caroot" password in ARCserve admin area:
www.killyman.com/pwchange_error.jpg
The back up job is run from a saved job file. When I select modify job and then save it again, I get prompted to confirm the Security and Agent info where a username called "dbagent" appears. See screenshot online at: www.killyman.com/securityandagent.gif
That "dbagent" user is in the Active Directory and I haven't reset the password for that account yet. Maybe I need to do that in Active Directory and then in the ARCserve Security and Agent window when I save a job?

If the user 'caroot' is not listed as a local user or a domain user then I would tend to believe it is a password stored in a small database accompanying your backup software. In which case, it must have a utitlity or function in its program to adjust user permissions and passwords.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I finally resolved the issue. I think I know how I did it.
In ARCserve's management console, I opened up the existing back up job (by just selecting modify job), but didn't actually modify any
details. When I clicked "save job" I was prompted with a "Security and Agent Information" dialog box. Inside that dialog box I had the
domain administrator's account and the dbagent's account with the password for both account in asterisk marks *****. See
screenshot here: www.killyman.com/securityandagent.gif
I highlighted the dbagent profile and clicked on the Security button to the right. Then I was able to change the password. I saved the
changes and the back up jobs have worked again ever since.
I'll recap the chain of events that seem to have led to the back up problem. A little over a week ago I changed the domain
administrator's password. I then went into ARCserve's Server Admin area and changed the password for the user account (which has
to be the same as the domain administrator). See screenshot: www.killyman.com/adminsettings.gif
Somehow the dbagent password in the ARCserve back up settings was also changed to the new password. But, I never changed the
dbagent password in Active Directory on the server. So, by changing the dbagent password back to the original password in the
ARCserve back up job profile settings, I was able to run the jobs again.
The only thing that doesn't make sense to me is how the dbagent password in the ARCserve settings got changed to the new
password for the administrator. Maybe ARCserve by default updates the dbagent password with the administrator's new password
even if you don't actually change the dbagent password in Active Directory?
Thank you all for your help.

I'm getting the following error in the back up log...
Error ID: E8604
Failed to start backup (DBNAME=dbaexchis, EC=Invalid user ID or password was submitted. If user ID is an NT domain account, please use Domain\Username.)
I changed the password accordingly for the domain administrator, but can't seem to change the password for the "caroot" owner. I get the following dialog box warning when I try to change the password for the "caroot" owner
Server DC1 failed to authenticate the user caroot (EC=-1)
I'll try posting this problem in a new post.
