I am getting seriously confused now over something that is so simple to explain, I have been told that a DSL Modem acts as a router, now by other people I have been told otherwise.
A router right is used to segment networks for a number of reasons, Organisations seperating servers from staff and different departments, security reasons, ammount of computers being a reason and also bandwidth issues, I am sure this is correct.
You can have hardware or software routers, hardware being predominantly CISCO devices and software being RRAS in Windows Server,
Now If I only have one machine with a normal DSL Modem then my computer that I sit on really is that Public IP as in if they ping that address they are pinging my physical computer, Now I still have 169.254.something as I have no DHCP server so I get given an IP address for my PC from the 169.254 something range, This i guess is where I get confused, Is my PC 169.254 or my Public ISP? or both?
I know My computer is the IP due to hacking in general, Now If i buy a router and plug my DSL modem into it and then the router into my computer, then yeah I understand that my IP address is basically the 192.168 or 10.0 depending on what the router configured for my PC as there is a mini DHCP server in there right?
Im not sure if your following, because it is even confusing me here, lol. I guess really what I am saying,if you install ICS or NAT on this machine right now, I only have one machine then my machine would be like a router? and I would get an IP address of 192.168 or whatever it had configured and then any pings coming into my computer would go to the ICS/NAT server first which would be this PC also and then send out to this machine but out to this machines local/private interface.
I seriously am confusing myself here, Im just asking is what Im saying right, and If it is not which is probably isnt, why isnt it? Can you explain what I have said much more simply?
It is just i hear a DSL modem acts as a router then by other it dont, but is it that a dsl modem/router obviously is classed as a router but a stand alone dsl modem does not routes hence my computer being the public IP, but as a router My machine is the local address and the router is the public address?
Thanks a bunch!
