Thanks dstewartjr - I'll give it a shot and report back shortly.
Thanks,
Shad
I've been working on a pc for the last few days and have had zero luck in restoring the network connections. The pc was infected initially with some malware and as it appeared that stuff went away so did the network connections. Even doing a system restore will not do anything when you click next; back and cancel both work. I've gone thru all the steps here http://support.microsoft.c
Dell Dimension 4600

Windows XP Home
Thanks!

Interesting I ran the reg-backup first and it gave an error for every key to save.
After the reboot it has not fixed the issue. Still reflects 0 objects and the message "The Network Connections Folder was unable to retrieve the list of Network adapters on your machine. Please make sure that the Network Connections services is enabled and running." which it is set to Automatic and is running (I don't think it actually started on it's own before).
What would you recommend trying next?
Thanks,
Shad
I would do a xp repair install
http://www.michaels
The only thing you lose is all the windows updates that occurred after initial install.
dstewartjr - Thanks I'll give that a shot next.
orangutang - Every so often you'll see in the System Log a few error messages stating XYZ service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this x time(s). The latest batch is as follows:
Remote Access Connection Manager - 3 times
Network Connections - 3 times (this was running before)
Help and Support - 3 times
COM+ Event System - 3 times
Background Intelligent Transfer Service - 1 time
Thanks,
Shad
Have you tried scanning with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.malwarebytes.o
O2 - BHO: (no name) - MRI_DISABLED - (no file)
O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - (no file)
fix the above two lines
make sure that your Windows Firewall/Internet Connecion Sharing(ICS) service is enabled and running
try booting in safemode with networking to check if you can access internet there or not?
Ok after a number of hours of doing the repair install (mucking with activation since it was originally a manufacturer install and I had a retail XP Home CD) I'm back up and running however NO network again. :-(
I do have to say it was an awesome learning experience though and at one point it seemed like all was won when logged in as Administrator in Safe Mode w/networking the Network Connections was populated.
What would everyone like to see or have me do next?
Thanks,
Shad
Hmm, maybe log into safe mode and send us your AutoRuns (http://technet.microsoft.
try this first
Step #1
Full uninstall of TCP/IP ... no bullbleep.
----------------
These steps are copied from http://support.microsoft.c
11. Locate the Nettcpip.inf file in %winroot%\inf, and then open the file in Notepad.
12. Locate the [MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall] section.
13. Edit the Characteristics = 0xa0 entry and replace 0xa0 with 0x80.
14. Save the file, and then exit Notepad.
15. In Control Panel, double-click Network Connections, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.
16. On the General tab, click Install, select Protocol, and then click Add.
17. In the Select Network Protocols window, click Have Disk.
18. In the Copy manufacturer's files from: text box, type c:\windows\inf, and then click OK.
19. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
Note This step will return you to the Local Area Connection Properties screen, but now the Uninstall button is available.
20. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click Uninstall, and then click Yes.
RESTART
succesfull uninstallation of TCP/IP will remove numerous keys from the registry including
HKLM/system/Curre
HKL
HKLM/syste

HKLM/syst
HKLM/syst

For good measure you should delete the following keys before reinstalling TCP/IP in step #2
HKLM/system/CurrentContr
HKLM/sys
S
Reinstall of TCP/IP
--------------------
Following the above substep #13, replace the 0x80 back to 0xa0, this will eliminate the related "unsigned driver" error that was encountered during the uninstallation phase.
Return to "local area connection"> properties > general tab > install > Protocol > TCP/IP
You may receive an "Extended Error" failure upon trying to reinstall the TCP/IP, this is related to the installer sub-system conflicting with the security database status.
to check the integrity of the security database
esentutl /g c:\windows\security\Databa
There may be a message saying database is out of date
first try the recovery option
esentutl /r c:\windows\security\Databa
this did not work for me, I needed the repair option
esentutl /p c:\windows\security\Databa
rerun the /g option to ensure that integrity is good and database is up to date.
Now return to the "local area network setup"
choose install > protocol > tcp/ip and try again
"Before I try that, quick question why would Network Connections reflect an entry in Safe Mode logged in as Administrator yet not reflect anything while in regular mode logged in as anyone with admin rights?"
not sure, but I forgot about this one give it a try first and then go back to my previous post if that dont work
dial a fix

what anti-virus are you running? can'e seem to find one from your log entries.
if there is none at the moment, then install Avast free home edition, update it, and then run a full system scan either at boot time or in safemode; let it to clean the system.
if this fails, then try the following:
log in with your user in normal mode
go to Start>Run>msconfig>Services, tick Hide All MS services, and then untick all the other services
then goto Startup tab, and click Disable All
Apply and restart, and check now if its working or not?
if yes then you can re-enable each item one by one to trace out the culprit
if no, then create a new windows user account for test purposes, and post back the results if network is working for this new user or not?
Well installing the Avast Antivirus did wonders. The system is "functional" and online once again however IE now ceases to function at all. Thanks for that recommedation!!
The error message (in Event Viewer) is Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16791, faulting module urlmon.dll, version 6.0.2900.2823, fault address 0x0003d7db. Is this because of doing the repair put IE files back to version 6 but the registry and some other files thinks it's version 7?
Thanks,
Shad
Avast was able to do what I would call a real boot scan (where it starts before you can select a user) whereas what I've used before waits until you select your user and it was during that boot scan that it discovered the virus. Now just some small things seem to be different for instance when opening services the "extended" view is completely blank but "standard" reflects everything as usual. Windows update is working internally within itself but you can't browse the site without IE. Firefox works fine for browsing however MS doesn't let you get any updates automatically that way.
