Unless SBS changed in 2008, from the 2003 version, you won't ever get a small businees server to communicate with another server. That's what sucks about the SBS versions of server. Hopefully the 08 version is fixed, otherwise you are out of luck.

MSR, that is a myth. You can have as many servers in an SBS domain, including DCs, as you are licensed for.
    http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2007/10/04/debunking-the-myth-about-additional-domain-controllers-replica-dcs-in-an-sbs-domain.aspx

The first place to start as far as coexistence is concerned is here:
    http://forums.techarena.in/server-migration/1110926.htm
    which leads to here:
    http://social.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/interopconversations/thread/bfb9fec7-88dc-4fea-93e3-c7b932155f54

The major concern is the disabling of the older forms of NTLM authentication that is required by NT4, and thus the root of the error.

Philip, thank you for your reply.

Having read through the links you provided, and finding other references, some progress has been made in that we can now (apparently) log the SBS2008 Domain Administrator onto the NT4 stand alone server and all, at first, seemed ok. Much joy!

However, it soon became apparent that all was not well as the NT4 servers Local Administrators Group showed SBS2008\Unknown Account instead of SBS2008\Domain Admin.

If this was removed we lost admin rights. If we added SBS2008\Domain Admin before removing SBS2008\Unknown Account we were ok but re-entering the Administrators Group membership screen we saw the entry had gone back to SBS2008\Unknown Account.

Perhaps needless to say, trying to give any SBS2008 Domain User or Group rights to anything on the NT4 failed giving one message or another.

The plot thickens?? More help would be very much appreciated.

    Regards
    George

Good to know. I have always stayed away from letting any of my clients purchase an SBS version of serer, pretty much specifically because of this.

What is the purpose of the NT4 box? Does it need to be domain joined? Can it be stand alone with local credentials set?

Hi MSR, The biggest issue in my mind is SBS2008s preset Policies. Minefield! I guess all will become clear with time but right now we dont have enough of that.

    -----------------------------------------

    Hello Philip.

It does need to be domain connected. It's running MS Transaction Server linking an Oracle DB with software written many years ago. It requires accessing via a security group to which the users must be a member. Now this may be changeable but the authors and expertise have long since gone I wouldnt have a clue how to change it.

It just has to last a few more months unfortunately.

I had thought of a separate 2003 domain which I know it will work and arrange trusts but I would prefer to crack this as were so close.

    Regards to both of you.

You can forget about setting up a separate domain; SBS does NOT support trusts.
Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on the W2k8 machine, and that the Computer Browser service is running. Install a WINS server on the W2k8 machine, and let your clients (including the W2k8) point to it.
Then pay special attention to the security policies, especially the Lan Manager authentication level, and the policy "Allow cryptography algorithms compatible with Windows NT 4.0".

    Thanks for you input oBdA.

Having made further enquiries, it has been decided to drop the legacy server with immediate effect so no further time can be allotted. I'm a little disappointed as I felt the answer was not too far away.

Parts of your suggestions (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942564) was the major clue to getting it joined to the SBS2008 domain and getting the Admin to logon. This was discovered earlier, but having got there, no security rights would hold, as described in my 12:46PM comment above.

As no further testing can take place, I cannot test your other links.

Thank you again for your response.
