Question

pinging issues with home LAN

Asked by: chriszanf

I have 1 desktop machine with 2 laptops on a home network. I am also using a Netgear hub [5 port version].

I have run the XP wizard and then entered static IP's for all the machines. Both laptops can connect to the internet through the desktop with ICS.

When I try to ping the desktop from either laptop I get "Request timed out". I can ping both laptops from the desktop.

I am not running XP firewall but have ZA running on the desktop.

run network wizard again from control panel...connect them again...provide static IP (as you wished) and make sure you identify the workgroup which they belong...then start pinging, .... oh by the way...make sure they are also on the same subnet mask .. just to make sure ;)....PING again and i think you will be fine :).

Do you recall if ping was permitted through Zone Alarm.  There might not have been anything wrong with your original settings.  After the rebuild as gudbuddy outlined be sure to check if ping is permitted or try other connectivity tests.

Check Back its TCP/IP Properties :

1. They must have different IP Addresses.
2. They must have the same default gateway, subnet mask and as well as DNS.
3. Under WINS tab, you must enable/check NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

Goodluck !
