Question

Problem with IE and Internet Connection Shareing

Asked by: JakeBushnell

Hi, I have a simple problem that I hope someone can help me with.
For some reason when I set up my internet (a sattalite service) to share over my P2P network, IE cannot browse.  It just sits there "sending request" to what ever page I try and does nothing.

I CAN browse with AOL however and can get my mail on my POP account  using MS Outlook.

It seems it should just be a small setting somewhere but I lack the experience to know just where!

Does any one have an idea?

I am using XP on all my systems.
Thanks, Jake

Hi, That was a very good link and it described my symptoms exatly but... It dident work. :(
When I ping the gatway ip with various sizes it gives me "The Packet must be Fragmented..etc"

That's fine, just like the link sayed.  But when I get below a certian number ie: 1439 the error message changes to say the the response timed out... So I used that number to set the MTU value.

Any way, after all that it still diden't make a diffrence.
Any other ideas?
Thanks

yes, please ping these ip addresses and let me know
127.0.0.1
ping 64.156.132.140
ping www.experts-exchange.com
please post the results here

by: stevenlewisPosted on 2004-01-10 at 05:34:20ID: 10086608

How are you shring the connection? ICS?
on the host, type
from a propt
ipconfig /all
and post the results here
then on a client do the same and post the results here

by: stevenlewisPosted on 2004-01-10 at 05:36:53ID: 10086614

Just a side note, once you change the MTU size, and then try the ping at that size, it will fragment, the MTU size must be larger than the packet size

I read on the MS support site that the Service Pack one was supposed to fix this problem so I am going to try to download it.

Thanks, Jake

And here is the Ip ping test on the client machine.

Are you trying to use AOL with ICS? can't be done

by: JakeBushnellPosted on 2004-01-10 at 09:50:07ID: 10087434

No, I relize that, I use DRECWAY Sattalite service as my ISP and I want to be able to access the web from my other computers over the net work.

I have had it set up for great for the last year but just recently the computer I used to use for the "host" gave up (prosesor went out).  I have installed this compaq in it's place as a temparay fix so we can keep woking Monday. I am planning on getting a nicer system next week but we got to keep working! our busnisness needs the internet prety bad.

I am going to raise the points up as I think this is starting to get a little hairy!
Any more ideas? I am going to contact microsoft to find out why I can't download the service pack.

Thanks, Jaocb

Did you setup ICS on the host machine?
go thur these steps to make sure
for step by step

see here

we are tallking about the clients not being able to browse or the host?

by: JakeBushnellPosted on 2004-01-10 at 11:10:24ID: 10087738

I GOT IT!!!
But first to awnser you questions...
#1 yes I have set up ICS on my host.  #2 Yes, I want to be able to browse on my clients

I got the Service Pack down loaded AND changed the MTU size to a very small # (1000) and it is seems to be working now.

I thoght the Service Pack would fix it alone but it did not. It seems strange that I had to do both but all I know is it works now!!

Thanks a lot for you help!!!

Jake
