asked on

Multiple services are terminated unexpectedly at startup in XP Pro

This is the exact same issue as Andyabra has as a current open question. Anyway I can find out if the was in fact resolved?
My issue also involves an XP Pro PC NOT connected to a domain though, it's currently an active P2P server for small office. and the detailed comments andyabra gives of all the Events are the exact same as mine issue from what I see. I can load the server and computer browser manually after boot up ,but this is not a way to run a system let alone an active server.
I'm considering doing a system restore, the problem only started last Monday, but not 100% confident it's going to resolve the issue.

Help!!

Cathy

Copy of Question as posted by andyabra:

On a WinXP Pro client in a W2K domain... the following services do NOT start on machine startup - all set  for automatic, all enabled for this profile:
     Computer Browser
     DHCP Client
     Workstation
     Server
As a result, network resources are unavailable.  If I manually start the services, everything works fine... until next restart.
Event viewer shows a bunch of related errors... 7000, 7001, 7031, 7034.  About 20 services fail to start (Terminal Services, WinTime, etc.) some with the additional error message "pipe state is invalid"
Haven't been able to find much on MS KB, maybe someone out there can tell me how to fix this??

what is showing in event viewer?
also system restore is a two way street, you can always go back to the future (now) if it doesn't work :-)

ASKER

Yes that is true about the system restore, that is in the plans for tomorrow, let's pray it works, but I wanted to try and get ahead of the game and get more ideas for a possible resolution.  Andyabra has the exact same issue and he details the event log, are you able to look at that question or will you need me to type in all the event logs. the main reason I ask is I'm at my office now, and the list is at my client's site saved in a text file. I'd have to get back to you tomorrow when I'm there. Let me know Please

Thanks

Cathy
I can look at his/her question, but would much rather see the actual log from this machine :-)
I be back tomorrow and post the event log and/or results of the  system restore.

Thanks

Cathy
hopefully we can resolve this :-)
today I ran the system restore back to Sunday feb 1st, problem appear the afternoon of Monday feb 2,..it did not resolve the problem.

System is a Dell Dimensions 4550, P4 2.8ghz, 512MB Memory, 2 x WD 80HD hardware mirrored using Adaptec 1200A raid controller, Raid 1. Windows XP Pro SP1, with critical updates installed.

As you will see below the error events most state Event The pipe state is invalid. I do not know what that means.

Thanks Cathy

I Cleared the Event logs and then restarted, this is what System Event records. Hope it helps shed some light on the issue. listed from latest to oldest

Thanks for comming FE. As I said in the email, this is a sick machine!
Yes...  one of my concerns here is the RAID card itself..  last year I had an issue with the Adaptec 1200 IDE controller card..  We ended up bumping it up to a 2400 model, which resolved the issue...  Although it was not the same OS (it was a W2K server) I was experiencing multiple errors in the event logs, and I could not even install the service paks without it crashing..  I am also reading some comments now regarding the 1200 where some problems are occurring...  Let me look into it further...
One thing you might try is to move the RAID card to a different PCI slot..  you may have to reinstall the drivers, but I doubt it...   When you installed SP1, did you have any trouble with the RAID showing..??

Other than that, I hate to say this.. but we may be looking at reinstalling the OS..  Please get a verified backup of the system ASAP..!!

I've also asked CO and gemarti to look in on this
Doesn't seem like a RAM issue to me, but it's strange how all the services terminate. If there was one service that all were dependent on, but I don't see a connection.
Were there any changes made to this system on the between the first time it booted to reveal the errors and the previous restart?
For example... if the system is generally shut down onece a week or day or month... any changes since then.?
hardware, software, windows update, virus scanner update,... anything
For each service that you note as failing do the following to get additional information on why the service failed:

START | RUN | CMD
enter:
sc query service name

Example:

+++++++++++++
G:\Documents and Settings\gemarti>sc query EventLog

SERVICE_NAME: EventLog
        TYPE               : 20  WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
        STATE              : 4  RUNNING
                                (NOT_STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,ACCEPTS_SHUTDOWN)
        WIN32_EXIT_CODE    : 0  (0x0)
        SERVICE_EXIT_CODE  : 0  (0x0)
        CHECKPOINT         : 0x0
        WAIT_HINT          : 0x0

+++++++++++++

Specifically Let's see the WIN32_EXIT_CODE information

First of all, thanks for all the comments and I will look into them all as soon as I can get back to the client site.

But thought I should mention that all we have to do to get the Server services back up after a reboot is go to  Administrative Tools then Services and manually Startup the Server service and Computer Browser service ,and also, have to remove the share on the printer and then recreate the share to get that working . and they are currently working ok with that for now, but this is not healthly at all and very strange.

I get back to you all as soon as I can.

Thanks again

Cathy
More Info that maybe relevent.  After I installed the Raid and mirrored etc on a Friday morning, I had installed other software for them (ZoneAlarm Pro with Updates) afterwards and therefor I had rebooted the system no doubt multiple times. and she didn't  call me with the problem until Monday afternoon and told me she had been trying to install the APC UPS monitoring software and that after that, they were not able to see this machine in Network Neighborhood. upon arrival I noticed that Server service was not loaded and I loaded it manually worked oK. after asking more questions about what she had been doing, the only relevent thing she mentioned is that she had first installed the APC UPS professional version and cause it had asked her questions she didn't understand, she uninstalled and then install just a personal version.  I removed the personal version and then setup XP's built in UPS monitoring setup and this made no difference.  This info is the only reason I do not think it's the Raid card, it was working fine after reboots when I left that friday. but in the world of computers anything is possible, that I know

Cathy

Thanks guys for comming in on this one!!
Under the services properties page, you are given an option as to what course of action to take upon failure of service on the recovery tab.
you can set it to restart service after 1 minute
have you tried that already with a couple of the sick services?
what was the result?

CHAD
Every service that is 'terminated' is related to the netsvcs of svchost
after the machine starts with service problems
try running this from the command prompt, it should attempt to start all the troubled services

svchost.exe -k netsvcs

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost
Just an update, We just got barried here in Moncton NB Canada in close to 50cm of snow and all office were closed yesterday. I will not be able to get into my client's office to check out this server PC situation further until sometime next week that is convenient with my client's now backup schedule, I will get back to you as soon as possible

again thanks for the input

Cathy
Hmm...I live in the Southeastern United States and when it even looks like snow they shut down everything.
I grew up in the Western US where if it was a blizzard they would still make us go to school.

I am suprised that in Canada they shut down after a snow. Of course I'm going to have to break out my calculator to convert centimeter to inches. :)

What is the world coming to?

We'll be waiting....btw: It is a beautiful day here in the South East US. Spring is near. Close your eyes and imagine it. :)
I had a similar problem here yesterday.  It was 70 degrees F and I was buried under sunlight and tequila.  It was rough and I didn't think I was going to make it.
Sorry, I just moved to Texas a few months ago from Wisconsin... I am not missing the snow any. ;-P
*grin*    Think I will run on up to Cleveland and play some golf with Steven this weekend..
Get a birdie for me... I am not allowed within 500 meters of a golf course.  A medical reason.
I start twitching and end up on the ground in a fetal position drooling on myself.  Not pretty.

I had a bad experience trying to learn and have been tramatized by it since.  I don't get it, I was doing very good on PS2 golf games.
Where in Texas...??   Used to live in Corpus...  Spent a lot of time in the surf..  :)
Nah... I wish.  I spent 8 years in the Navy and I didn't think I would miss the ocean.  Think about it everyday living in Dallas.
Great... you got me crying...thanx.  boohoo..
Nice to see you all have a sense of humor, actually 50cm of snow is normol for a storm here, but the 80 to 100km winds you couldn't see too far in front of you, very dangerous ,,  Halifax just below us got 80cm with 120km winds. but the sun shines today! Thank the Lord ! Its so white its blinding.  Golf in May if we're lucky!  Skiers and skidoos and snow boarders here are in Heaven!
OK, I'm onsite, hope someone is available, but anyway, here what I've found..

No Virus

using gemarti's suggestion, I was able to find that Messenger service when disableed allows all other services to load fine.  but I do not know why the messenger service is hanging, if I try to load it manually after the system has booted OK, it still errors out and eventually hangs the computer to the point that I have to manually reboot it.
Also, Win32_exit_code = 1067, helpmsg gives Process Terminated unexpectantly and enumdepend gives Enum:extriesRead=0

Any suggestest as to why the messenger will not load and is it truely relevent to have it functioning. this system is used for file and print sharing only, it's not an active workstation.

Thanks
I'm leaving On-site now and currently all is functioning OK ,except the Messenger Service is disabled.

I re-installed Norton 2003 Pro OK
ZoneAlarm Pro 4.X OK

Before considering this question resolved and accepting an answer, I would like to find out what the issue with the messenger is ? if it's relevent and may cause this client issues with it being disable since this PC is acting as a P2P server, I'm not 100% sure what use it may have. I assume this service has a specific and needed function.

Thanks

Cathy
Probably the best and most authoritative site on services:

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
Disableing the messenger service shouldn't have any adverse affect, unless your clients use net send to or from that machine, or use it to send alerts to an admin when services fail. Event log will still log errors. But the messenger service is the net send service
Hi, Stevenlewis , that's good to hear , I don't think they will notice it's not there.  Ok, now this being all new to me and my first question  and I appreciate all the comments I received in helping with this problem it was really Gemarti's comment that guided me in the direction to solve the problem. So, with that I assume I go to his comment area and click accept? I don't want to offend anyone since you all took the time to assist, but I think that's how it works, just want to verfiy before I do.

Thanks
Naw...  don't worry about offending the experts here, we all have thick skins....  :)

You are right, if one particular comment pointed you in the right direction, then just Accept that comment.  You will then be given a choice on how to grade the answer...  Just like a teacher in a classroom..  :)

For future reference, just so you know, if more than one expert helps you, you can always split the points between them...

Glad to see we were able to help, and come back soon...

FE
Thank you.
Cathy, good news, glad we were able to help!
Good job gemarti!!
Hello,

I was wondering if you still had issues with this.  I have about 10 machines that are having the same problem.  I looked on Microsoft's Website and they had a hotfix for this.  I installed and it looked like it disable the message service, but yesterday it the problem occured again.

Thanks for any help.

Here is the hot fix that I found

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823830&Product=WinXP

The only difference between the previous problem that I see on the thread and mine is that I can not start the services manually.

Just for back ground we have approx 18 computers with XP and only 8-10 are having problems (so far) and they are from the same image.
