I currently have a peer-to-peer network consisting of a cable modem, Linksys wireless router BEFW11S4 (acting as primary gateway, acting as DHCP server for internal network) with 4 laptops (3 w/ XP pro and 1 w/ win2K) connected wirelessly through it, and 1 desktop machine (XP pro) cabled to the router.
I have just gotten a new Dell Poweredge 2600 with SBS 2003 Standard on it, and want to set up my local client/server network, using the DHCP on the server rather than on the wireless. The server has two nic's, the built-in gigabit connector (which is hooked directly to the cable modem, and is working just fine, using my ISP's primary and secondary DNS settings) and then the second adapter, going out to the wireless router (and here is where the problem begins). I have disabled the DHCP on the wireless router, I have followed the setup instructions to set my DNS on the server (pointing to it's own IP address as the primary DNS, no secondary) checked my DHCP on the server, and tried to "see" the router from the new server, but no luck. I have set the server local nic's IP to 192.68.1.2, as the router is 192.168.1.1, and as long as I use the router's DHCP capabilities, I can see it just fine, but as soon as I disable the DHCP on the router, assign it a static IP, and try to find it again, no go.
I'm sure I am missing something, but I am somewhat limited in my ability to tinker, as everything that I'm working with is live (all 5 of our employees need to be able to email and hit the web during business hours, and I do not have a test environment to play with), so I cannot bring the whole shebang down to try various settings (our office is in my business partners' house)
Please let me know what info you might need to make sense out of all this, and I will do my best to get it to you asap.
I am going to a conference in Las Vegas this weekend and would really like to have this done, so that I can set up remote connectivity before I leave.
Thank you much,
