Internet Connection Sharing Troubleshooting

Hi

I have set up ICS on Windows 98 and have added a new PC which is WinXP.  These computers are networked and everything is ok, however the XP client keeps dialling the ICS machine to establish a connection to the internet.  I have read all the other solutions I could find, and have followed all those instructions.  All auto updates, messenger, AV etc have been turned off.  I want this Winxp to dial up only when Mail or IE is opened, not every 2 minutes as it is doing now.  Is there a registery entry or something that needs to be adjusted to have this stop dialling?  It should be a dial on demand only.  All other computers sharing this ICS do not dial automatically, only the XP one.

What email client are you using?  Many times there is a setting or preference which tells it to check for mail every (x) minutes.  In Outlook Express, go to Tools -> Options.  On the General tab look to see if Check for new messages every... is checked.  If so, uncheck it.  Other mail clients will generally have similar settings.

I am using Outlook mail, the setting to check for message is definitely unchecked, its still dialling every 2 minutes.

`It could be a few things, the automatic windows update for one
go here

and shut off any unneeded services
If that doesn't help
you can try one fo these
check out remote disconnect (free)

as a work around. You will have to set the host to never dial

Is zonealarm installed? some earlier versions of ZA wold also cause this

Found it!!!  Your answer helped me to find the problem.

It was an automatic update but one for HP (printer software) customer service survey which I turned off and an auto HP software update checker which I also turned off.

I also installed the remote disconnect as you indicated as bonus to disconnect from the internet remotely.

Thanks everyone for your help, I will close the question now.
